Our kids are about as excited as we are about moving to TV. They have already talked about a reunion next summer.
My question is: Those of you who have extended family come for a week, where do they stay? And what activities do you plan? We have grand kids from in the womb to seniors in high school. Extended family numbering 20+. We have thought we would rent a house or two for the week. We know that they can use the family pools. Any other activities we should (or should not) plan with them? I know they would enjoy the squares in the evenings with music and dancing. Can my hubby take the older boys golfing? Is there an age restriction on the golf courses? If so, what is it? Can we reserve a picnic shelter at one of the rec areas for an evening? I know some will venture off to Disney etc. But just wondering about activities around TV. Is there any playground park type area for the little ones? Lots of questions, sorry. But once I said "yes" I started to be concerned about how welcome a family reunion group would be after all. Any comments or replies from your own experience would be appreciated! Thanks! |

My dad and his wife live in The Villages and have had grandchildren ages 2 to 21 visit. There is a kids petting farm nearby that the really little ones have enjoyed. My kids (now ages, 15, 18, and 21 but started going to TV at 9, 12, and 15) love TV. With adult supervision, they play pool and ping pong. There is a playground. We have done geocaching. They love going to the squares. There is the boat ride. They have gone Kayaking and air gun shooting. My daughter was very excited once she turned 18 so she could play bucco. Once they were old enough, my dad took them to an empty church parking lot to learn how to drive the golf cart. They were never allowed to take the cart alone until 18. Everyone has always been very nice to all my children and my husband and myself. I would spend a day at Daytona Beach and climb the light house at Ponce de Leon. Two years ago we all went zip-lining at the Sanford Zoo. We have learned to make a list at the beginning of the trip or we do not get everything in.

There is a nice pirate ship playground at Sumter Landing for the kids and a beautiful little walking path there as well. There's a pavilion and chairs for the adults to sit and watch the children and other wildlife. It is down the street from Sonny's BBQ, sort of across from the parking lot behind Sonny's and Barnes and Noble. I would take the little kids to Uncle Donald's farm. It is an absolute blast. It is a real farm with animals and a hayride.
Disney and all the Orlando attractions are a must see, I realize that, but I have learned that everyone loves going to Weeki Wachi to see the mermaids and to Silver Springs for the glass bottom boat ride and to the Orange Blossom Opry and, and, and they like to just lay around the pool and go for a golf cart ride. Yes, they can play golf. I don't think there is a cut-off age. Just play ready golf and have fun. They can fish, play shuffle board, go to the archery range, the movies, the library, oh my. I'm tired just thinking about it all. Where do they stay? When they come to see us, they stay with us. Last year we had 4 adults and 4 children stay with us. We spent 3 days at Disney to take the load off. Their parents bought the house across from us so we have extra room for ALL of our family now. Relax. Make good memories. Have fun. |

I personally know someone who played when they were 100. What's the limit?

According to my neighbor, the golf restriction is that if you are under a certain age (don't know exactly what that age is) you need some kind of certificate or letter to play. I think it is more to certify that you know golf etiquette.
There are also driving ranges as well as a miniature golf course. There is bowling which could make for a fun family activity. There are also all the activities put on by Camp Villages. There are airboat rides, daytrips to Kennedy Space Center, etc. |

Lake Weir has covered pavilions you can rent for the day. Just ask for one near the playground. There's room to set up games, a basketball court, water to play/swim in. A nice set up for a large group and would be perfect for a family fun day in the sun.

Dotti,
Are you talking "our" Summer or "their" Summer. Remember "our" summers are very hot and humid, with a lot of rain. Maybe they should make it a week in the Winter. Just sayin........

There is a beautiful little park on 44 just about a mile down the road from Brownwood. It is called Okahumpka. It has a huge playground for the children, a 9 hole Frisbee golf course, new bathrooms, and a huge pavilion with grills for picnics. Cornhole boards, and beach volley ball (no ocean but the courts are sand). Pets on leashes are always welcome. The paved walking tracks are looped so you can take a short walk or combine them for a 2 mile walk. There is a boat launch for the lake as well.

Spend a day at New Smyrna Beach. Park on the beach. You are on the ocean.

Thanks all, it sounds like some great places close by as well as the amenities in TV.
I think they will find plenty to entertain themselves!! Thanks so much!! |
