Sinkholes randomly occur in The Villages as well as all of central Florida.

Sinkholes, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes sunami's and the likes are inevitable and can occur almost anywhere. There is no safe haven and if you think there is, you are not living in the real world. Tomorrow will always be a mystery until it happens. Don't know where you live, but wonder if you have the same concern about catastrophic acts that might occur there????? And, if so, how does that same concern work for you????

Living in CT, I have felt in the past it was safe except for a snow and or ice storm that was very rare. Driving and getting around is the biggest pain in the rear. I too was concerned about hurricanes and sinkholes. With all that being said, I feel the advantages of living in TV far outweigh what risk there may be.
In the tri-state region we have had Hurricane Sandy and the 30 inch snowfall last month and are due for another snowfall, so no place is ever totally safe. Anyone that says different is not dealing with reality. I feel that sinkholes are to be a concern and it's prudent to have insurance. I think the likelihood of a sinkhole is a rare occurence but is somewhat possible. There are no guarantees in life.

Probably more of a danger are the lightning strikes we have here. This area of central Florida has more lightning strikes than any place in the U.S. No matter where we live there is some deadly natural event that can occur unexpectedly.

It is a risk you have to accept if you move to the area. I think water features increase the risk.

All home insurance policies in Florida contain catastrophic ground collapse coverage which is NOT the same a sinkhole coverage. One of the requirements for a valid claim under catastrophic ground collapse is the home must be condemned you can Google it to get all of the requirements for a valid claim. Sinkhole coverage must be offered by home insurance companies that insure in the state of Florida but the key word is offered, it doesn't mean that it must be offered to every home that is insured, insurance companies do an inspection of the residence and also have other key things they look at for example the proximity of any known sinkholes in the area. The sinkhole coverage if you get it contains at least a 10% deductible (10% of the value of the home, so a $200,000 house has a $20,000 deductible) and covers damage caused by a sinkhole like cracks in the foundation, walls, windows or doors that won't open plus other cost to repair and support the home. If you Google both coverage's you will get a better idea of what the requirements and coverage's contain. |

Cantwaittoarrivre is exactly correct. My homeowners policy through the village insurance office contains the 10% deductible clause. Sinkholes do occur in TV and across Florida. If it (Sinkhole) happens to your home it will be very expensive in addition to all the "other things" connected to such an event. Hopefully, you won't be in the house if it happens. Now, what are the odds? Long odds would be my best quess.
