Default Heading north on 301

I was told that when heading north stay on 301 past I 10 and I can avoid Jacksonville. They said it is a faster way to connect to I95 somewhere north of Jacksonville. Has anyone tried this way?

Have taken this route many times. Just be patient going through the small towns and watch the speed limits, a couple of areas are known speed traps.

To clarify the route, 301 north to I10 heading east (it is a left hand turn on to the ramp), then take the I295 loop north which connects to I95 near the Jacksonville airport.

We have used it several times and like it. There is 2 to 4 lane construction but it does not slow traffic. Check you maps and cut over on A1A. This avoids the route 10 and 295 traffic.

Careful going thru Starke or you may get a ticket even though you were not speeding.

The AAA has only 2 designated " speed traps" in the US: Stark and Waldo Florida.

Does it make sense to go west to I75 and get on 310 a ways up?

I tried that, I think time wise it is about the same, adds a few miles going over to I75.

If you want nothing but interstates 301 is not a good idea. But 301 is 4 lanes and pretty wide open for much of the trip. Plus you get to see what Florida is like in a more rural setting.

Travel over the speed limit and Waldo will find you.

OP was asking about 301 north of I10. Anybody take that route?

Wow - I misread that! I think taking it to I10 and then over to I295 avoids most of Jacksonville but I have never traveled north of I10 on 301. Probably a nice ride crossing into Georgia.

Waldo should be out of commission. There was an article in the Sun about a month ago that the Mayor and a bunch of the town employees were under arrest for taking in hundreds of thousand in fines and spending it on themselves and not the town. They even mentioned how they would move around the speed limit signs from day-to-day.

Taking I-75 to I-10 is faster driving, but might not be faster getting there since you're traveling an additional 65 miles. The US 301 to I-10 to I-295 to I-95 is the fastest route I have found.

If you want to avoid rush hour traffic, then stay on US 301 past I-10 for about 15 miles and in Callahan pick up A1A and go about ten miles and you'll be on I-95 north of Jacksonville by the airport.

You can continue on 301 north of I-10 up to the booming metropolis of Callahan. Turn right (east) on SR200 and it will take you to I-95 north of Jax and near the Fla/Ga border. SR200/A1A also continues on east to Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island.

Both Waldo and Starke are not the infamous speed traps of old ... when the speed limit went from 60 to 35 with no warning and city cops shooting radar 24/7/365. Both now have AMPLE "reduce your speed ahead" and clearly posted speed limits that ramp your speed down. If you get a ticket in either of them these days ... it is your fault.
