Default Homestead Exemption

Now that our only residence is in TVs and we have our Florida driver's licenses, where do we go to obtain the property tax homestead exemption for 2011?

You must file for a homestead exemption with the Property Appraiser in the county in which the property is located. That would be either Marion, Sumter, or lake county.

Just Google the appropriate one and it will show you where to go and what you will need to bring with you to prove you're eligible.

Also, don't forget to file for homestead protection. A totally seperate issue commonly forgotten.

It's not a seperate issue in Florida. Once you establish your Florida home as your primary residence, the protection of your from creditors is automatic.

Filing for the homestead tax exemption, is in itself establishing the home as your primary residence.

I don't know how it is in Georgia but in Minnesota you can only homestead one house. If we keep our place in MN. with homestead we can't do it too a home in Florida.
