Default Homestead Exemption

If the home you purchased had a Homestead exemption, then you are GRANDFATHERED IN for 2010 Taxes which are paid in arrears. Either way you must apply for an Exemption in Your Names In January 2011.

Forms can be obtained online from the county property assessor.

WELCOME TO THE VILLAGES!!

Short answer is no, you will not be able to claim homestead exemption for 2010. But, if you bought it from someone who did have the (2010) exemption, then it would apply for this years tax bill, described above as "grandfathered in". But that is only for 2010.
The exemption is available (providing you meet all the requirements on the Property Appraisers website) to residents living in the property on the 1st of January of the tax year being claimed. The deadline for 2010 has long passed. After Jan 1, be sure to file for 2011. But don't wait too long as you must file in first 3 months of 2011.
