Default Honk your horn to alert drivers cutting the corners entering the tunnels.

I almost got in an "accident" yesterday at the Caroline end of the tunnel under Morse by SweetBay. A driver severely cut the corner entering the tunnel from the Caroline side as I was approaching the east side of the tunnel.

I once saw a driver honking her horn whenever she approached a tunnel entrance or exit. I pondered this behavior for a couple of seconds before I realized she was warning drivers approaching the from the opposite direction of her presence. I started doing it myself, but with the decreased traffic of summer I got out of the habit.

After yesterday's near miss, I will get back into the habit again.

Why people think it is appropriate to cut blind corners I'll never know. Its such a dangerous thing to do.

As always, and especially when living in a retirement community, we must interact with each other with kindness and patience. Everyone makes mistakes.

Be safe and practice defensive driving.

And stay on you side of the road near those tunnels!

This is a major problem where I live. Golf cart drivers come off a through road using a left turn to get into our village and cut the corner from the left hand corner over to the right, and if you are waiting in your car to make a turn, and in their way when they try to do this you usually get the one finger salute as if you are the one in the wrong. I am waiting for the day when a golf cart gets knocked out of the way by an approaching car, and it will happen.

There are a few cart paths that have blind curves as well. I've had a few instances where the other driver comes flying around the cirve on my side of the path and look at me as if I'm in the wrong for just being there .

The cart I drive most is a long body four seater and we have to pull out sometimes into the oncoming cart lane to get it to turn in tight places, usually tunnels north of 466. I am very careful.

I run thru that tunnel all the time. Both ways. I was yelled at once by a woman in a golf cart because she told me I was supposed to run against traffic. I tried to explain (while running) about the blind curves. When I run down that hill into the tunnel (from Carololine side) I run with the traffic. They can see me. Anyone coming out of the tunnel (From Sweetbay) taking that sharp right would be mighty surprised to see me there on the other side to meet them.

Didn't stop the lady from berating me calling me an idiot because I was running with traffic instead of against. These tunnels can be dangerous entering or exiting enough without running into an unexpected pedestrian on the other side.

sorry, kitty. i don't mean to wish bad luck on ya - but please get used to a horn honk, and maybe start to practice it yourself. just a close call or two should help you understand the fear that prompts that sort of behavior.

Please don't honk the horn. Those golf cart horns always startle me cause they are so loud plus I would have no idea whose honking or why. This could cause someone to look around to see what's going on and could very well cause an accident.

Honk when you need to! That's why they put them in just like the turn signals...oh wait, those seem to be for optional use also or to just leave them on continuously because you silenced the buzzer horn too cause it scared or irritated you as well. Phew!!

That tunnel at the Caroline side of Morse is dangerous in both directions. There are those that cut the corner going into the tunnel from the Caroline side especially. But there are also those that when exiting the tunnel swing out wide into the lane going toward the tunnel.

I don't know what to suggest regarding honking the horn. My hearing is apparently very sensitive to the frequency of the cart horns. When someone honks while we're both in the tunnel, it is very painful to me. On the other hand, that is, perhaps, a small price to pay to avoid a head-on collision.
