You can run the filter (pump) with or without the heater on. When we use our hot tub on a cool evening, it takes about 20 minutes to bring the temperature up to a comfort level. Also, our hot tub spills into our pool, so with the "spa" setting on instead of the "pool", just the spa (hot tub) is heated.

This is an above ground hot tub.Totally different animal. We opted to NOT get a pool this time around. Thanks for responding.
