I thought my Facebook page was on lock down. If you go to Facebook and search for my name, all you will get is my picture and my name. Nothing else.

Imagine my surprise when I got a very odd and very long love note from some semi-literate quack in Texas (or at least that is where he said he was from). The love note was sent to my private yahoo email but he talked about seeing my profile on Facebook, where my yahoo email is listed.

That is impossible I told myself, as I blocked his email, checked it as spam, and frantically looked at all my Facebook settings.

I finally figured out I was silly enough to put my Facebook link on my profile on TOTV. It is gone now. Lesson learned. Yikers and jiminies!

One of the reasons I do not go onto Facebook.

Facebook says it is safe but I went on a few years back, and received an invitation for someone I didn't know from Adam. It spooked me enough to know, "this is not for me".

Some of my family members are on Facebook and find out things other family members post, that are so, private in nature.

Why anyone does that is beyond me but then, I tend to have a healthy respect for my privacy.

I was stalked on Facebook by someone from TOTV. I of course put a block on them and on my personal email, but it certainly was a lesson learned. I did consider going to the police with it but decided to try and fix it on my own and if it persists I will certainly take more action.

It is also a reason why some members on TOTV remain anonymous.

I was the victim of many cruel and untrue posts on another forum by someone from TOTV. I did take it to the police and they have the information identifying the person. I can bring charges it if it ever happens again. Thank Goodness for a TOTV poster who is a lawyer who suggested I do that.

Some employers frown on employees participating in social media. Initially, I felt this was violating my rights, but did abide by the rule.

A year ago our son in law (IT state employee) received a phone call from a local TV station, while at work, asking what he thought of his "friends" recent arrest for sexual abuse of a child. He asked who this "friend" was and no, he had no idea there was an arrest, and what were they talking about. Apparently, he met this individual in collage, many years ago, and they both played sports. Beyond that casual meeting, he hadn't kept in touch, but was on the individuals friend list.

I had a better understanding after this incident what another individual does can reflect on me, when they may be only a "friend".

We have been plowing through a lesson in my class the last few days regarding privacy. It's very interesting when you here young people talk about the issue. They have only lived in this digital age and have no clue how to remain private, let alone why it's important. Using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or even TOTV you, to a point, risk your personal privacy.

It's so good to hear that this discussion is a part of your lesson plans. You are getting your students to THINK.

I can understand how interesting it must be to talk with today's students about privacy issues. I used to tell kids that the internet is the world -- and all that entails.

Facebook has many privacy settings and if you intend to use it, you need to become familiar with and use those settings.

People will condemn and live in fear without even "trying" to understand "how" things works. Some people just (choose) to live in the dark.

That's it exactly. They don't really understand (or they think they do, but they really don't) and they end up being afraid of so many things.

In fairness, Facebook in particular frequently changes its privacy settings and deliberately leaves its users in the dark. You have to find out through a news article.

There are many jobs now in marketing and social media where applicants must provide links to demonstrate their personal online presence and mastery of same. As a fuddy duddy, it's kind of shocking to me that people would be willing to share that -- it's not just their own info, it's everyone they talk to and those people talk to ...
