Default Identity Theft of Debit Card

Hi guys:

Got a call today from the fraud dept of Citizen's Bank. Someone made a copy of our Citizen's First debit card and have been using it all over Atlanta to the tune of about $600 at this point. Could have happened when we were in Michigan or in the Villages. We have no idea. Pretty sure it didn't happen on line as we use my card for on line purchases. They did say if we file a report we will get our money back in a few days. We also put a fraud alert on our credit reports. The guy on the phone said it happens often unfortunately, but this is our first time.

This has been the crime of choice over the past few years. The police department I worked at here in Mi formed a joint task task force with three other police agencies dedicated to fraud and identity theft. There isn't much you can do if your card number is stolen but I try to check my accounts everyday in hopes of catching any illegal activity. Good luck.

I have alerts set up in my bank that sends me text messages as soon as any entry passes any of my accounts. You should with your bank. They may have something similar.

When I go cross country at night I check the American Express accounts. A 6 Gallon Harley Fill up and the gas company charge Amx over $100 at each fill up for the day.

It all works out at the end of the month, I never use a debit card at a pump or dinning out.

Our debit card was compromised a couple of weeks ago as well. Someone in Raleigh, NC was enjoying spending our money. Our bank immediately put a freeze on our account. After a short investigation, our money was returned to our account and new debit cards were issued. This incident has made us a little gun shy, so we have started paying with good ole fashion money!

I NEVER use my debit card if it has to leave my hand personally but use my credit card for that, such as at a restaurant. I always pay close attention to any device that I stick it into to try and spot some device attached to it that may be stealing my info and also try to cover with my other hand when entering the pin number. I also NEVER use my debit card for an online purchase, but use my credit card for that.

Just got a call from RBC bank which is a US branch of a Canadian bank. Apparently someone has been using our RBC VISA credit card and the Visa fraud dept. noticed that it hadn't been used since May. They called to confirm that it was compromised and are issuing new ones. The purchases were online so someone got the number somewhere.

I understand that debit cards are an even easier target, but this is the 3rd time one of our cards has been compromised without leaving our hands. And they would have to get the 3 security numbers on the back too! Thankfully we don't have to pay for the theft.

We have had two credit cards compromised since we've been here in TV. Seems like it happens all the time. My cards were also being used on Raliegh, NC. Check accounts daily and think about cash only.
