Default Inoperable water meter?

Our water treatment service advises that house water meter is inoperable and that a call to utility service would get it fixed. Not the case. Our original request for service was cancelled. Not sure why. Been told that we can ask for emergency shut off ahead of scheduled service to our water treatment system but have to wait till April to ask for emergency service to meter? We cant get our water treatment system serviced till water is shut off at main and tech cannot shut off water to main until utility fixes it. Feel like we are running in circles here. Been told that Jacobs is the contractor responsible? Any ideas?

There is a main shutoff prior to the water meter, then the meter itself, and then a shutoff inside your home. The meter itself has nothing to do with shutting off water, it simply measures the water flowing through it.

The softener company should shut off the water at your inside valve and install their equipment after that. They should have no need to care about your meter or the main shutoff.

If for some reason the softener company intends to replace your inside shutoff then yes, the main shutoff would need to be used. I don't know how typical this would be.

The concept of scheduling an emergency shutoff is strange - either it is something that can be scheduled or it is an emergency.

Jacobs is the contractor for the District Utilities office but you need to work through the District office rather than trying to contact Jacobs directly.

My suggestion:
- Get a better understanding of why the main needs to be shut off rather than the shutoff inside your house
- Get a better understanding why you are being told the water meter is broken since the meter has nothing to do with water filtering an nothing to do with water shutoff
- Contact District Utilities Customer Service at 352-750-0000 (from districtgov.org page) and explain to them what you need

This sounds like the water treatment service company is trying to pull a fast one on you. If you can use another company, please call them. If they are the only supplier for this equipment call a local plumber (possible with a handyman) to look at your system and confirm you have a working shutoff valve. Then with this information have a discussion with the local water treatment company with a hint of filing a complaint with the main company office. I really do not like the sound of this whole situation, and I am concerned the water treatment company is trying to take advantage of you.
