Companies aren't stupid. It is all about cost/benefit(profit) ratio.

In advertising its all about the number of hits your going to get. With all the snowbirds and renters leaving the pool of active shoppers goes down. Companies like to make their advertising budgets go as far as possible and they are probably holding back on spending in the paper as opposed to other mediums. Also watch around different holidays for circulars to increase, like memorial day next month.

Weekly ads are available online. Cheaper for the companies and better for the environment. Quite honestly inserts are not that effective as a sales tool to the overall masses.

Snowbirds migrate north, less shoppers, not cost effective.

I've noticed that ever growing trend when "home" in south Florida, used to need help hoisting the Miami Herald on Sundays, same at our adult children's home in St. Louis. Newspapers are clearly dying, so the days of every major store (Macy's, Kohl's, Home Depot to CVS...) using newspaper inserts and providing us with at least an entire afternoon of perusing are long gone. Ads, coupons, "deals" and "come ons" are done via "apps". It's ingenious how businesses have shifted the burden to customers to pay the monthly bill for the cell phones to get virtual coupons which no longer are a printing and distribution expense for a business. Most other "services" have eliminated the huge cost of billing, for instance cable providers, banks, credit cards, they can take their payments directly from their customer's private (LOL !) bank accounts and eliminate many employees, printers, mailing departments, and so on. Today I received a notice that Starbucks, in an effort to save the PLANET (not save money and increase profits for Starbucks at all ) are now "urging" customers to bring in their own containers... no, not just the BUY our container and get reduced price refills, that's been around for some time at many places. But SB's is now urging customers to bring in any container, from the favorite home coffee mug, to their favorite sport drink container, and get their favorite SB beverage for $.10 LESS. Maybe restaurants will, eventually (who knows ?) give a small discount if we bring our own plate ! Maybe it will begin with buffet restaurants and spread in popularity ?

Daily sun is cheap and enjoy reading the sports section. Bring the papers up north to start fires in the wood stove.

Advertising with the newspaper is very expensive and most marketing people know the internet is the best bang for your buck. Direct to the people

Depends on the target demographic trying to be reached. Internet definitely the way to go for younger urbanites. Print media still a good marketing vehicle for retirement community demographic.
