Of Interest to Northeastern Ohio Villagers
At Christmas time do you remember Mr. Jingeling? The Sterling-Linder Christmas tree? Shopping at Higbees, Halles and May Co.? Well, there is a book on Amazon "Cleveland Christmas Memories" loaded with pictures and stories of growing up at Christmas time near Cleveland. I spent an entire morning last December calling around trying to get this book and finally ended up in Hudson at the Learned Owl (they held the last copy for me). And Francis the Talking Mule at Sterling. What great memories. It was safe to take the Rapid downtown and get a frosted malted on our way out of Higbee's. We could walk to May Company but Halle's was too far. Love my old Cleveland memories and will hop over to Amazon.com to get my copy. As Captain Penny would say, "You can fool all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can't fool Mom." Thanks for the smile.

Many of us have fond memories and that is why I mentioned the book as so many I had forgot over the years. Surprised to see so many Villagers from Northeastern Ohio. I wonder how many Villagers even know that A Christmas Story was filmed in Cleveland, every year the cast members have a reunion in Cleveland around Thanksgiving and that the Ralphie's home is open to tourists. How about posting some of your memories.

Memories: Taking the bus home from High School (Lourdes Academy), getting off at Public Square, going to Higbee's basement for a cold one (Frostie!), then getting on another bus to go home.

I remember my Dad driving me and my Mom to see the Christmas lights downtown. I informed my wife I sort of remember a giant Santa Claus on the top of a canopy of one of the major department stores. As time went on I thought maybe it was my imagination as a child and then, while attending the annual Christmas Connection at the IX center a guy was selling vintage photos of Cleveland. As I flipped thru the photos there it was....A Gigantic Santa on top of the canopy at Higbee's. It was about 20 feet high! Next to it was a huge sign "Christmas 1952". It wasn't my childhood imagination and to this day I have that photo out every Christmas.

Have always had Thanksgiving dinner at home but, some friends called and we decided to celebrate at the 356th Bomber Squadron at the Akron-Canton Airport. Food was great! Atmosphere military of course! Biggest surprise was how many people eat out on Thanksgiving. Crowd was immense and had to ride around the parking lot a few times when we were lucky enough to have someone pull out. Still can't get over how many people eat out on Thanksgiving!!
