Default IRS scam

I'm quite certain this is a scam. Received a message from Officer (whoever) calling from the IRS, saying I need to call right away, blahblablah, and if I don't he feels sorry for what will happen. Not very well spoken (although he didn't actually say blahblah blah...that's me paraphrasing ) Obviously a scam, but in my haste I deleted the message, and am now curious. Has anyone else ever received or heard of this scam? What's the point? I know on a lot of the international ones they are actually using your phone # to bill other calls, so I hesitate to call them back, just to see. Also, I can't seem to get a truly FREE reverse phone lookup website. Anybody have one?

It is definitely a scam, and there was an article about it in the paper the other day. Don't waste your time on this. The IRS does not make phone calls about unpaid taxes - they send you a notice in the mail.

Oh, yeah...having dealt with them before, I know that. And, yes, my husband just said there was an article in the paper. Like I said, I guess I was just curious as to what the scam was, and it appears they are just trying to get info. Big indicator of scam is (now I remember) it starts off with "this call is for you"...hahaha, no name. Thanks for replying.

One of the tip offs is that the IRS doesn't ever call or email anyone out of the blue. You will get a letter asking you to call them or if you ignore them or have really been bad, they will visit you at home complete with credentials (Revenue Agent) or badge (Special Agent).

Yes!! That's the number!! And that's exactly what I wanted to do, but I was curious first what their scam was. I think some of those international scam calls actually can then us your number to make other call, so I hesitated calling them back. Also got today...a call from "PRIVATE 1-000-000-0000". Didn't pick that one up.

If you receive one of these calls (or similar ones), you should fill out the form at
Contact: IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting - U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA)

The pieces that accumulate from these contact forms help build a profile of the folks behind it.

Thank you! Discussed with my husband calling the police...you know, impersonating an Officer and all that, but in my haste, I deleted the message after writing the phone number down. Anyway, I'll check this out.
