Just rejected a friend request from a name which has never posted a single message.
What does a friend request get a member anyway? |

On the passive side, they can watch what you and your friends post about themselves: places they are visiting, vacation schedules, responses to polls, responses to stupid and meaningless questions that sometimes turn up as security questions, etc. On the active side, they can post something that will be seen and possibly shared by your friends. Want to push a piece of disinformation? Put it in a meme that gets seen by dozens, shared by a few, and then seen by hundreds more. There might be a financial aspect too. If businesses were willing to give me half a cent for every time someone looked at or clicked on an add then it would benefit me to have a large network of people who saw my posts. I don't know if this is an incentive but from some of the posts I see on FB I can believe that it is.

One of my grand daughters crowd has over 3000 friends on Facebook.
Think it is an ego or status thing. I have a Facebook account I use just to see what our kids are up too. My only Facebook friend is my dog. I had to starve him for a week, and threaten him with the Vet to get him to ask. Billy No-mates. |

I have zero online friends and am proud of it. The friends I do have, I can see and touch. Never going to have it any other way. |

Some of the old timers who have been in TV for about 20 yrs might remember it was all the rage to get loads of "friends". When I started to post I got requests and turned them all down. I have friends, don't need more especially from someone I don't personally know.

There are very gullible people on the internet. There are also predators on the internet. If you tend toward the naive or gullible, then you are the perfect prey for predators. Never accept a friend request from someone you either don't know, or haven't interacted with for awhile in front of others (such as on an internet forum rather than private message). I have tons of followers on Twitter but I mute any who try to private message me there.

Here is my "go to" for friend requests. Do I know you now? Do I want to know you? Imagine if someone just walked up to you and said "wanna be friends?" You'd think those same thoughts, but of course, in person there's an opportunity to better answer them. Earlier poster said it all; those who collect "friends" may want to become influencers or just have the collecting spirit. If you are talking FB, you can "unfriend" someone without it being a public event (unlike in real life!). Not sure about other platforms, but as they all compete with each other, it's probably an option there as well.

I won’t “friend” anyone that I don’t trust enough to let them spend the night alone in my house. I don’t want to risk burglary if I post pictures while I’m on a trip.

What does it get you? On the positive sides you get in touch with people you haven’t seen in many years. Personally I enjoy that. However, it can be very dangerous. I’ve gotten messages that say they have read my messages and, “even though you don’t know me, I find your messages interesting and I’d like to get to know you better”!!!! These are usually from men. In a case like that I block them by clicking on their name, hitting the 3 dots at the top right and hitting BLOCK. We must be vigilant to protect ourselves. It can be very dangerous in cyberspace.
