So that's how they find the hydrants after a snowstorm?

downeaster:
True! See, we don't need six-foot poles off the hydrant, because we don't get that much snow. So, the little blue gizmos are sufficient. And, of course, they can be in the street because we never need plows - and plows would tear them out right quick! ![]() ![]() ![]() SWR ![]()

The small white or yellow reflectors in the center of the road are called Botts' Dots.
"Botts' dots are named after Dr. Elbert Dysart Botts, a California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) engineer credited with overseeing the research that led to the development of the markers." .

The blue lights indicate that the light below has turned red. This provides LEOs from any angle whether a car has obeyed a red light

![]() Those blue lights are for the benefit of emergency vehicles. Not to be confused with Kmart's blue light specials. First sentence, serious. Second sentence, smart aleck. Last edited by downeaster; 07-11-2011 at 03:52 PM. Reason: Spelling |

The smiley face was first drawn by a guy named Harvey Ball, an employee of the State Mutual Life Assurance Corp.(now known as Allmerica). as a morale-boosting gimmick on inter-office paperwork. Great things have come from Worcester, MA.

In every Max and Erma's Restaurant there is hanging the same exact copy of a large brewery workers family picnic in Columbus, Ohio taken in 1938. There are 17 members of my family in that picture.
