Default Flocks flying south

We rose early this morning to watch the sunrise and noticed continuous flocks of birds which appeared to be herons but seemed smaller (or maybe just further away) all flying south.

Do they know something we don't know?

Birds that do not know what they are doing and why end up dead. This is mid August.
October it starts to get cool. Flying at low barometric pressure, humid air is more work for the birds, reason why you will see they do not fly as high and often walk rather than fly.

Those grey sand hill cranes. I know they can fly. I've seen them do it. They have huge wings. They can't all be seniors. They regularly walk in front of cars. I have only seen one that was run over. Is it a sport for them?

Getting as far away from DC as far as they can.
