Default Another “happy” homeowner maintenance tip

If you’re a DIYer around your CYV castle like me, you might want to check this out before it gets out of hand and causes possible further damage(s). You see I’m talking about those plastic exhaust vent covers that attach to the underside of the soffits exterior on the bathroom sides of the abode.

Dummy me, I should have discovered this problem months ago when I discovered pieces of this vent cover being played with by the dogs and wondering where in the heck it came from. When I discovered my neighbor’s vent hose dangling down from the soffit of their CYV, I was quickly introduced to this pesky problem...the cover had just deteriorated and fallen off.

I made my way to Ace Hardware and the salesperson immediately deciphered my description of the problem and thereafter pointed to boxes of these brand new soffit covers in the back, chuckling and he did that they were “Villager” specials...one of the most popular items that they sell. And just to think, I could have one for $5.99...what a bargain for something that has at most 15 cents worth of plastic in it. But I digress, I replaced my neighbor’s cover and didn’t give another thought that maybe, just maybe that my covers on the opposite side of my castle might be in the same deteriorating condition.

Just the other day I made my way over to the other side of my castle to spray for weeds and when I looked up at my 3 soffit vent covers, or at least what was left of them, I thought here we go again. (See pics below.) 2 of the 3 were so deteriorated that a mere touch crumbled the entire cover: the other had already deteriorated and the hose was exposed.

Back to Ace and to my shock, I found 4 new boxes of covers and the price had gone up a dollar each. I left with 3 new soffit covers and a bill for over $22 bucks.

Now why all of this diatribe about an overpriced piece of plastic? I post this as an alert that one needs to pay attention to what I surmise has to be a common problem in TV. I mean, if you had a hole in your roof, you’d know about it sooner than later. But if you have a missing soffit cover, you now have a 4” entrance hole to the interior of your castle where wasps and small birds can make a nest. And they will...I got stung by a ginormous wasp as I attached a cover to the hose that was hanging down.

Don’t wait until 7 years of home age to take an inventory of your home and the “not so subtle” penetrations to your kingdom’s inner wealth.

Thanks for the heads up. Did you look at Lowe’s or just Ace? Why did you replace your neighbors? And finally where were you spraying for weeds? My Villa is fenced in so the other side of my house is not my responsibility, it is the neighbors so I don’t go through the gate unless I need to check on my house itself.

When you install you new ones, make sure that the flap swings freely. It should open when the fan is running and swing closed when not.

The original screw holes for mine caused the housing to slightly squeeze into the flap and prevent it from moving. I had to take them back off and scrape that sides of the flaps to make them slightly smaller. Then re-installed. Done

(1) Pics didn't post for some reason...will try again.
(2) Yes, I tried Lowes...they didn't have a clue as to what I was talking about, so went to Ace.
(3) I replaced my neighbor's because I'm a nice guy, and only after I mentioned it to them...it's a rental unit.
(4) I was spraying for weeds on the opposite side because my neighbor DOES NOT uphold his responsibility for maintenance of this side of MY house. He never has, and probably NEVER will...so he or his tenant now look at a strip of pebble stone covering. I frequently keep tabs on this side to avoid problems coming up because of his lack of responsibility.
