Most banks in the U.S. charge 5% commission for exchanging foreign currency. You will get a better rate in Europe. You only need enough currency for expenses like taxi, tipping, airport food - just enough to cover you until you can get to a bank.

One rule that "seasoned" travelers stick to - never exchange money at the airport that you leave from or where you land. They have outrageous commission rates because you are a captive customer - do or don't - they don't care.

When you reach your destination, use your credit card. They have the lowest commission rate because of the millions that they handle and it will give you a record of where you spent your money.

By the way, Capital One has a savings account with a debit card that has no ATM fee anywhere in the world and good at almost all banks.

I got my Euros at an ATM at the airport in Europe using my card from the Citizens First Bank.

Default The Revolut Card

If you are going to Europe, I’d recommend getting the Revolut Card. It is a debit card and allows you to exchange between currencies for no fee at bank rates.

With the card, you don’t have to worry about ‘losing’ your Euros and like the US, everyone accepts cards.

Rates fluctuate moment by moment as they do on the exchange.. July 7 @ 0900 EST the rate is 1.10

We always get Euros from ATMs (with a Debit card) after we get to our destination. We get just enough to pay for incidentals and then pay for everything else with a credit card. Prevents coming back with Euros that we then have to deal with.

In May I ordered from Bank Of America with no fees. If you have a “Preferred Account” status you save more on the rate when you have it sent to the bank vs. you. You can go in and order or do it online.

Default Looking for Euros

I recently purchased some from Chase as my bank no longer had them. Chase required a Chase savings or checking account. I have Chase Visa account and was able to purchase euros but had to use cash. They arrived at the bank in one day
Try all the bigger banks
Bon Voyage!

One of the best cards for exchange rate and charges to travel in Europe with, is from Wise Banking.
We use it all the time.
Use it anywhere in the world, just add relevant currency from your own bank account.
You can add funds of any currency when exchange rates are most favorable to you.

Best to use atm or pay credit card
That’s if your bank or cc has no fee(most don’t have fee anymore)
I meant pay in their currency with cc
No fees with….
Money changer in country you’re always charged commission
Hope this helped
