To start paying the required 9% tax on their rental properties. The FL Department of revenue is getting addresses off rental websites and sending notices to the rental property owners to register their properties for their sale tax certificate so that they can start the mandatory rental tax of 9%.
They just connected my brother in law that advertises in thevillages4rent.com website. Maybe this will start leveling the ![]() ![]() ![]() |

First of all, The Address is not listed on thevillages4rent, so you are wrong on that.
2nd, No THEY won't raise the rent 9% because the renters will pay whatever. It is a very competitive market, outside of January, February & March. The state compares "ownership records" with "Homestead" records, and then sends a questionaire of what the property is used for. If the owner chooses to lie, then they might get away for a period of time, but "I wouldn't mess with the government if I owned property in The Villages", because my life is too good to mess with the gov over 9%. That is the owners chance to come straight and from then on, "your life will be good again". |

There is a state tax requirement for anyone renting out a property for less than six months. Short-term rentals are required to pay a 9 percent lodging tax. Not a big deal, but our property manager collects it and passes the info on each month. We then, must file with the state and send in payments. The application can be filled in online and filed. Our rental is currently being rented for 12 months so our status with the state is inactive. When that changes, we will go back to paying the tax. Better safe than sorry.

We used to own a home in Kissimmee, sold it a while back. We were told from day 1, that the S T R tax must be collected. Knew some people who collected it and kept it! We left collected it each time, then let our accountants deal with it. Worked perfectly.

Making it 15% would help decrease rental properties in TV. Get too many rentals and you will drive this place down badly. Rental properties are like 7-11 stores. They tell a lot about the neiborhood.

I would hope Florida raises the tax to double because rentals here in TV only works against people who view it as a retirement community and not a vacation destination. Why do I object to rentals? Because budgeting and planning will be mis-directed to accommodate vacationers vis a vis retired residents who call this home. There is a sufficient base of year around residents and the red herring of renting is good for our economy is just that a red herring

About the Political Spam you received, you would be better served if you researched the issue instead of taking the bait... and certainly passing the bait along to others! Here is a recent discussion on the forum about the bill. I posted a link to a news article about the bill. I will admit I did not study the issue closely. My take was that it returned power from the state to local community government. The details are too complex to discuss in a post. FL is passing a law about local gov't controlling how you can rent your homes |
