Default Moffitt Cancer Center Coming To The Villages

This was the headline in this mornings Daily Sun. The developer is financing and building the second tower addition to the Sharon Morse Building. It will house the complete Moffitt Cancer Center, which is planned to be operative by early next year.
This is great news, I would guess the article will be up on the Daily Sun web site soon. http://thevillagesdailysun.com/

That's good news for everyone. I have had two cancer surgeries and go to NY for cat scan's 3 times a year. Rather have the family come down here once we get settled. Moffit Center sounds ideal.
Question I have is how do you get affordable insurance ( less than $8K/yr )before you're 65 with pre-existing conditions and not disabled. I can get cobra for 18 months so I 2.5 years before I can do that. If I can do it we might be able to come down sooner!!

THis is really wonderful news. We lived in Tampa prior to moving to TheVillages. I had breast cancer in 2003 and was treated at Moffitt. You have no idea what a wonderful place this is. After treatment I still had to be seen every three months. Now they only see me once a year. When being treated at Moffitt, an Interdisciplinary Team oversees your treatment. I am thrilled they will be so close.

This is wonderful news. A few years ago when my wife was undergoing treatments we had 20 - 30 minute drives each way and then further into the process we had to go to a different facility that was one hour away. For a patient getting 3 to 4 hours of chemo that drive home can be awful. The developer deserves thanks for his part in this.

I am currently receiving treatment at Moffitt (and USF) in Tampa. Eighty miles one way by car twice a week. You better believe I am glad they are opening a facility within five miles by golf cart.

BTW, if you are not familiar with Moffitt, Google them. Pretty impressive organization.

Default Thanks to the Morse Family

This is wonderful news and we have the developer to thank for bringing Moffitt to TV. We will have world class cancer treatment a cart ride away. I just learned that his wife died of cancer and wonder how long ago that was. They will be extending the Sharon Morse building to accommodate Moffitt.

I give a lot of kudos to Joe Gorman, President of the POA for his support and dedication to getting the word out to TV peeps to contact the "powers-that-be" to make this happen.

Sounds like a place I may throw my resume to.

Kudos to Gary Morse for making it one of his goals for TV.

I agree. It is interesting to note Mr. Gorman was not mentioned in the Daily Sun article.

Is this the 60,000 square foot center that has been proposed for Leesburg? The article was unclear about this. The only reason I say that is that $2million of cancer treatemnt equipment does not go very far. I would like to read somewhere that the Leesburg center is off the table. Call me cautious.

Funny, it doesn't say that there will only be 2M in equipment but that everything will be provided except that 2M. I wonder exactly which services will be provided and what you would still need to go to Tampa for.

You are right as usual Russ.

It takes a lot of staff and equipment and experience to duplicate a Cancer mega center.

This means that most costs for the Moffitt center will be covered, with the exception of approximately $2 million of specialty cancer equipment, which will require some charitable contributions during the year of construction.
Well, not exactly, but you cannot buy a "world class" linear accelerator for $2mm. I sure hope I am wrong. And why would you need to raise these funds by charitable contributions? They should be covered by patient/insurance receipts. I just would like to hear that they are not building a 60,000 square foot center in Leesburg, as was proposed originally.
