We will be coming to the Villages soon and our new home has a Murphy bed in it (no mattress). The idea of the Murphy bed is great but are people happy with them? Do guests like sleeping on them?

It seems like the mattresses can't be very thick and the mattresses you buy these days all seem to be very thick (tall). How have your experiences been? Where can you buy a comfortable mattress that will fit a Murphy bed?

10" to 12" thick well-constructed mattresses are available for murphy beds, but the cabinet enclosing the bed must be deep enough to accommodate the thicker mattress. Over the years we have guested at friends' homes sleeping on standard thin hide-a-bed mattresses. The only good thing to say about a standard thin mattress is that it doesn't encourage someone to stay very long. The thicker mattress is about the same as the "box spring" mattress used with a normal bed. We have one with an 11" mattress and it "sleeps" as comfortably as our regular bed.

We used Wall Beds Plus to construct ours and were pleased with their recommendations, design, and installation.

While his name escapes me currently, there is a guy (company) that has pop-up advertisements on Gold Wingnuts videos for Murphy beds. If you pull up any of Gold Wingnut's more recent videos, you will see rhe ad. Might be a good resource.

We replaced the original mattress on one murphy bed with a decent quality memory foam mattress. It improved the sleep quality quite a bit.

We tried using a standard mattress that we had first ~ it was too heavy. The bed mechanism could not handle the weight, and would have been damaged if we had continued using it.

The mattress is thinner than most primary mattresses. When sheet shopping, read sheet depth carefully, or you'll wind up with a sheet that is far too big and a sloppy fit.

We have a murphy that accommodates a regular up to 12" thick mattress. Very comfortable to sleep on.

I built both of my Murphy beds. Both have a Queen size standard mattress in them, and are very comfortable. No issues with the mechanism. Murphy beds typically have one of two mechanisms in them for lifting - pistons or springs. For pistons, the amount of weight that can be handled is based on mount points for the piston on the attachment plate. The piston can be simply moved for more or less weight. For springs, it's based on the number of springs. I have one of each, and would go with the piston with both if I had to do it over again.

-I am looking for someone to assemble a kit from BredaBeds that contains all the pre-drilled parts and spring mechanisms for a horizontally-oriented full(double)-sized Murphy bed (about 5' high and 75" wide). Does anyone have any recommendations? I am not sure whether just any handyman will be adept at positioning springs/pistons/etc. for the best and safest open/close result, but maybe it's not as hard as I imagine.
