Google name change after divorce in Sumter County Florida. You should come up with various laws firms who practice law in this area in the area of family law. It might get complicated if you were divorced in another State or Country. And when this happened.

My understanding is they change it along with the divorce decree, if you so choose. Otherwise, if you wait there are documents you can file at the courthouse that will officially change your name. The documents are lengthy and take some time for approval. If you are sure you want to change your name I'd do it with the divorce papers, so I'd ask there first.

In FL and many states your attorney will ask if you wish to return legally to your maiden name. Usually for a fee they will also acquire forms for IRS, SS, with documents you can then change banking, DL and credit cards. A return to maiden name is less complicated because of birth certificate, than a “I hate my name” change.
If you chose if wait, you can file at county, with form and birth certificate. Some counties require a visit to a judge for proceedings, and final decree. Fees can be under $500, for simple change, or additional court fees. No attorney is needed, but if you need to change or get a will, (you should remove that spouse) they can also help, for small fee, two birds one stone. Sometimes google does give you all alternatives.

[if you did not do it at the time of divorce, you need to file a name change petition. Either use a lawyer or see if the court has fill in the blank forms.

Any attorney can assist with that change. It doesn’t need to be attached to the divorce filings.

When I got divorced from my second husband, I went back to my first ex husband's name because that was my daughter's name. I asked my attorney about it and he said I could start using the desired name immediately. Seems as long as you aren't using a name to defraud people, you can call yourself anything you want. I changed my license, SS and all legal documents. That was in 1975, still using the name. I could have petitioned the court, but didn't. I suppose it could be harder to do that now.

It is an absolute hassle to change your name, and you will be fighting it for years after...airlines frequent flyer numbers don't match photo ID for example so good luck earning or using those points. My advice to my daughter is to NEVER change her legal name! There is your legal name and the name that you use socially, and that social name can match the name of your husband and your children. But to answer your question, you need to start with you social security number and will need the divorce decree. After you get that changed, you can then proceed with license or passport using the social and birth certificate as proof of name. But, again do you really hate the name that much? It is a long, arduous and frustrating process!
