And being forced to slow down also allows a good pic to be taken of license plate when exiting …….

The card that you are supposed to use identifies you, not your car. If you are single, it does not matter too much. If you use something attached to your mirror, your car is identifying as the person from which the card was cloned when it passes through the gate.

You might become a person of interest...

Amen. It's a safety issue to slow traffic to eliminate crashes and greatly reduce damage and injuries. I don't believe the primary reason is to reduce crime or limit access to non-residents.

We have found *any* key fob works...the round 1/2" disk I have on my key ring to access doors at work and the one on my wife's key chain for our vacation home--both work on all the gates we have tried here in the Villages. We no longer use our TV cards--just the fob in our pocket.

IDK-maybe I'm unlocking the doors at work every time I swipe my key ring at the gate reader on Marsh Bend Trail...

Not true. In the past, even The Villages website referred to It as a gated community until many people complained. Some people still think it is a gated community.

The Villages is using the wrong kind of card for gates. The current read range for a Villages gate card is about 2 feet. A real gate pass is UHF and has a read range up to 15 feet. You could leave a UHF card inside of a little clear plastic sleeve on your windshield and it would work from a distance. Attention Required! | Cloudflare
The big square grey readers have been able to read UHF since about 1987 I believe. So if they just started issuing UHF cards it would make everyone's life easier.

EDIT: issuing UHF cards would of course just be the first step. The cards would need to be dual technology to work with any old readers that don't have UHF, and then all new readers purchased could be UHF capable. Then slowly replace older readers. Instead of doing it all at once.

“Deep tinted” driver and passenger front side windows are illegal in Florida. The tint must allow at least 28% of light through.

Amazon sells UHF cards, but can they be cloned from the current short range card using the read/write card gizmo that people buy on Amazon for $20?

I don't mind the gate stop issue, the extra five seconds doesn't bother me. Maybe they should create some new villages that have no gates and those that hate gates can move there.

That is why I only use my own card to make and use a clone on my own car. If I make a clone for someone else, I use their card.

So much work and effort people go through, just to create a sense of convenience and not get their hand wet. Hours and hours and pages upon pages people read, to find out how to create this sense of convenience. To me - THAT is the inconvenience. All those hours and pages to save mere seconds. It's like reverse-engineering a toaster oven just to figure out a way how to use it without turning it on, when turning it on would provide perfectly good toast. Such a first-world problem.

Some people seem to think that, just because the card works through the window on their car and on the gates that they use, it will work for everyone. That is simply not true.

That is interesting, but the District has already said months ago that they were going to start issuing long range cards. They could even charge for them and many people, including me, would pay for them. But apparently, they have now rejected the idea. Is there some reason why these UHF cards would be difficult or costly to implement? Please be specific as to how a UHF card can be made that will work with the current gates.

Totally opposed to long range cards if it enables the gates to be up longer & allows vehicles to go through at higher speeds. Only emergency vehicles should have that ability while sounding sirens. Otherwise it is dangerous to carts, pedestrians & bicycles.

When the gates are broken & removed for any reason, people tend to speed through. Not safe. Plus I cannot see how the cameras can capture those vehicles plates.
