I would suggest never making major life decisions based on ANY forum or website. It's the nature of the internet. The nastier voices are typically the most persistent...and also a very small minority. They certainly don't represent the vast majority of the folks living in The Villages.

And the Admins are working to make this site better. It's all good. :)

While spirited discussions will surely abound in the coming months of the November elections and will be more easily identified as political, what about the grayer areas? Where will you draw the line? A discussion of the 25% property tax increase is most certainly of profound interest to Villages residents and Sumter county alike, it easily shifts to a discussion of those making the decisions and that pending election, where will you draw the line?

Since the posting of this thread you have had no teeth, this post https://www.talkofthevillages.com/fo...people-307816/ was clearly and purely political and offensive in nature and yet was allowed to fester for 90 posts. A quick review of the threads and posts on may of the forums show a great many clearly laced with political tones and derogatory comments. Where is the line to be drawn on these? When will this line be like a knife at the throat of liberty?

Obviously this website is free to pluck and purn its branches as it sees fit. We can only hope they are not too aggressive as to kill the tree.

Sensible and logical post, as usual GWN.

Since almost every expression a person makes is based on that person’s foundational beliefs, separating communications into political and apolitical may result in TOTV becoming nothing more than a community calendar and a place to sell used stuff. That’s fine but it may not keep drawing a lot of views.

Year-round retired Villagers run the risk of becoming disconnected from each other and from happenings outside The Bubble, especially those who are in COVID isolation now, so I hope TOTV will continue to be a neighborly place to share thoughts and concerns.

Discerning what is and is not political may be virtually impossible for the Moderators but promoting courtesy and civility would make everyone feel like a respected and valued part of the community. It’s going to be interesting to watch, that’s for sure.

Oh please do not, under any circumstances, think that TOTV is indicative of actually living here. I live in a village with people of all political views and yet you will never hear politics being discussed. We do have one banner waving person who most of us, of both parties, choose to ignore, but he is a minority. What you read on this chat line is totally foreign to me and I am coming to the conclusion that most of these people don't even live here in TV. This is a wonderful place to live.

Still more politics in this email. Please delete the threads and block user for a week! Thank you for your service 😊

And so it begins^

It's got to be a thankless and exhausting job for mods to sift through all the nastiness. The name-calling is especially tiresome. On that note, I would like to see anyone who calls those of us who are being cautious for the greater good "maskies" to be banned. There is no call for such meanness.

Dear TOTV users,

Talk of The Villages was originally created as a forum for Villagers to come together easily, and discuss happenings across the town and beyond. However, in recent months, we have seen a surge of posts that violate our site guidelines, and have impacted the general mood across the forum.

Let us remind you that posting about politics is strictly forbidden. This includes the mention of political parties, political individuals, or any political topics. Even with warnings and reminders of this rule, users continue to post about politics. We will now begin giving out one week temporary bans to any user who violates this rule. If users continue to defy this rule, longer or even permanent bans will be given.

In addition, discussion on TOTV should remain kind and respectful. Negatively directed posts are not allowed. Negative posts directed at other users will be deleted, and any user who continues to disregard this rule will be subjected to a temporary ban.

We understand that during these tumultuous times, it is cathartic to come to the forum and discuss everything happening on the news and in our community. We encourage open discussion, and welcome everyone with different backgrounds and viewpoints. To reflect this, we have decided to create a new sub-forum dedicated solely to current events and news. On this side of the forum, users will be able to discuss everything happening in the world, and those who do not wish to participate, can easily ignore this sub-forum. This sub-forum will still adhere to site guidelines, and will be moderated according to these rules. This means there will still be no political discussion allowed. All we ask from our users is respect towards each other, regardless of differing opinions, and respect towards our site guidelines.

Lastly, please note that the General Discussions Forum is meant for topics related to The Villages, Florida. This includes topics related to buying in the area, and for things related to living in The Villages. The New Members Forum is meant for new members to the site who wish to introduce themselves to everyone on the forum. If you post a topic that does not fit these descriptions, your post will be moved to the correct forum.

If you wish to review our site guidelines, you can find them here: https://www.talkofthevillages.com/fo...p?pageid=rules

Thank you for the warning. I’ll bite my tongue & won’t mention or try not to mention a political party a politicians name, thanks for the warning!

Glad this will be monitored going forward. My biggest complaint is while just reading another post I went past several political adds all of which are for 1 particular party. I have seen quite a few of these adds so IF there is to be no political discussions (which I whole heartedly agree with) what’s up with the adds?

Thank you for the work you do and for the courage to take action to stop this insane cruelty towards one another.

Aren't there some posters here who have used their own photo? Does anyone here know if it's permitted to do so? IMHO a person's name--in and of itself-- won't cause heartache, but it can get nasty after a while. Perhaps a photo will be less a cause of anything, and we may never see that person walking, driving, golfing in TV. Safer?

Thank you. I rarely post but did enjoy reading most of them. Started becoming too hateful and I was on the verge of deleting myself, even if I lost access to other site areas. Again, thanks.

PLEASE do NOT delete yourself! What a terrible way to go!

We agree.

In our visits we didn't see any outward displays of what's been going on here of late in the threads and posts, so were shocked at some people's reactions and simmering anger.

It hasn't changed our decision of moving there, but has opened our eyes a bit on what we may experience once we become residents.

In the two years I have lived here, I have learned to never discuss certain subjects that are contrary to the majority OR DISPLAY same on my golf cart, lest I have my tires slashed or Gorilla Glue spread on my windshield. Otherwise, this is a great place to live. Come on down!

I appreciate the measures you are putting in place to keep this a friendly area.

I have never seen/heard where using a photo of yourself...is prohibited.

In fact, I am using mine. :D

Seriously though, I have thought of doing so myself...but my allergies won't let me.

My allergies are to...crowds with pitchforks and burning torches.

Thank you for posting this. We just recently moved to the Villages and TOTV was suggested as a way to learn whats going on in TV. However, no matter how many chances I gave this forum, I continuously was so very disappointed in it. There was so much animosity displayed and angry retorts that I want to discontinue my membership. So hopefully, people will respond positively to your post and it may be a nicer place to visit. Again, thank you.
