I have a neighbor who has a wind chime in her front lawn that is driving me crazy. I love opening up my front door and I have a storm door with screen. Love the air flow that comes in through the front and goes out the sliding doors in back. But the constant 'klank klank klank' all day long is tedious and is driving me crazy.
I'm not close to these neighbors as I only wave as I'm coming and going...how would you approach this situation without it ending up with the 'windchime' neighbors anger with me. This is a serious question so please don't make light of it as many of you do on this sight. Thanks |

Not sure there is a way to tell someone that something they love is driving you crazy.
Do you think if she moved it to a spot on the other side of the house it would be more tolerable? If so, maybe you could suggest that. One thing you could is lie -- tell her you're prone to severe migraines and the wind chime is exasperating the pain. People are much more accepting when it is a medical issue. Good luck. I truly understand your feeling. To me, wind chimes are like mornings: both should be banned from life.

I would just tell her the truth. The wind chimes are driving you nuts. Say it nicely and if she's a nice person she will remove them or find another place for them that won't be so close. If she's not a nice person.....hmmmm, good luck 😖

I have a wind chime on my front porch and I would hope my neighbor would say something to me if it really bothered her.

I would politely tell her you're not a fan, and ask her if she could move it to a location away from your door. Or I'd get up at 3 AM and confiscate the chimes. ![]()

My neighbors have wind chimes but the houses are not close enough to really hear them. What village are you in. I'm just surprised you are close enough to hear them.

Exactly!! When I first put my chimes out front, I asked the neighbors if they could hear it or if it bothered them. Everyone said no, BUT we do have some new neighbor's so maybe I will ask..thanks for the reminder. However, I would NOT be offended in the least if a neighbor, just a waver or not, approached me KINDLY and told me they were bothersome. I'd rather they told me than hate on my poor unsuspecting chimes...

Sounds (good and bad) effect people in different ways. There have been threads devoted to many different sounds -- wind chimes, as GG pointed out, and frogs. I'm just so happy to be here that I don't care. One thing I acquired in my 45 years of working in an office environment is the ability to block out noises. Wind chimes are far superior to the noise of people checking their phone messages or conference calls on speaker phones -- far superior IMHO.

wait till they go out to dinner and place them on the ground so they appear to have fallen. maybe the neighbor will take them down to check them out and possibly move them. can't hurt trying.....

Are wind chimes discussed in the covenants? Some things aren't permitted and I'm not familiar enough with the rules to know what is and is not allowed. Bet someone on the forum would know.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! went the flagpole.........
While walking through our village one morning, we noticed a flagpole where a kind of bumper effect had been created for the rope. Turns out the owner had been asked by his neighbor if something could be done about the sound. (I know. Right now, you can all hear, in your heads, exactly the sound I am talking about.) Having never lived near a flagpole, I had never thought about that sound. Fortunately, the neighbor was neighborly and solved the problem when asked. When I read this thread, I remembered that flagpole and thought I would throw this in here. Not trying to make the wind chimes pale in comparison. Answers will vary as to the sounds that can drive us to madness..... A hundred years ago, while I was taking the ACT, the girl sitting behind me kept sniffing and sniffing. -- Allergy season in Ohio. And early on a Saturday morning. -- When I could not stand it anymore, I turned around and whispered, in a not very nice tone, "Blow your nose!" -- She did. I was so lucky not to get kicked out of that test for turning around and talking. Looking back on that day, I have to wonder if adding to my annoyance was the fact that she had a really scratchy pencil and was quickly filling in the math answers in what I interpreted as a rather self-righteous manner. Oh well, we both moved on.....I guess......Oh, well......I digress.....So anyway...... I hope the OP's neighbor is as nice as the man who solved the flagpole problem when asked. Thanks for all your suggestions and comments. I went over today and explained about the noise of the wind chimes. My neighbor was not pleased but she did say she would move it. I thanked her and left to go out to dinner. Just drove past her house and the wind chimes are gone. Not sure I'll ever be invited over for drinks, but I can open my front door and it's quiet!
