You can get one at Walmart on Rt466. Pretty cheap and gets the job done, but phone calls and texting only...

I have had a WalMart phone via Virgin Mobile for years. It costs me $20 every 3 months. I do not use it very often as it is only for emergencies.

I bought a phone thru Straight Talk at Walmart, $45.00/month unlimited talk/text/web. They also have a plan for international calls added, I think it is $10.00 more a month(I think). I got a phone that uses the Verizon towers and have had excellant coverage w it. Love it.

I have a pay as you go since I never use the phone. But I can also get web if desired ($2.50 per day extra). My cell phone bill for the YEAR is less than $50. I use a T-Mobile pay as you go plan. But then again I really only call for pizza, tee times and other emergencies like that.

You can buy a Trac phone at places like Target, Staples for $15.00, then purchase minutes at places like Walgreen for $20 for 120 minutes. The phone is only good for as long as you have active minutes.

Welcome back!!!! We're Brits from Rainton in North Yorkshire. We too have UK cell phones and we don't dare use them here in USA. What we did several years ago was to take our phones to T-Mobile for a USA SIM Card. This allowed us to use a pay-as-you-go account that suited our needs. We don't do any texting or use the internet on it so we are able to use the service for little or no money. However, since that time, things have changed with Pay-as-you-go services. They have become more expensive and certainly more involved and are available from all phone carriers.

I would suggest going to a Walmart type local phone and keeping your UK phone for use only in the UK. The walmart phones are inexpensive and they have phones to fit whatever your needs might be. Give them a shot....

Cheers

I bought an inexpensive "ATT Go phone" at Best Buy and added prepaid minutes. BB set it up for me at no cost. Very inexpensive if only used infrequently.

I suggest you look into a Tracfone. You can read more about them at TracFone Wireless | Prepaid Cell Phone | Pay As You Go | No Contract Cell Phone. One very nice feature is that there is free international long distance to many countries. The only cost for such a call is your minutes. If you're on a 15 minute call overseas, the only cost is that 15 minutes will be deducted from the minutes you have "banked" in your phone. For a list of the countries you can call, go to: TracFone Service | TracFone Frequently Asked Questions

You can purchase a phone from Walmarts, the Tracfone.com website, OR from QVC.com or HSN.com. If you purchase from either of the last two places, you can probably find a phone that will give you triple minutes for life. (Meaning, if you purchase a 400 minute card which costs $100 and which gives you coverage for one full year, you will actually end up with 1200 minutes for the same cost of $100).

If you purchase your phone from QVC.com or HSN.com, it will come with 1200 minutes on it, IF you choose one of the models which provides triple minutes for life. This offer (triple minutes) is NOT currently available from any retail store.

I have had very good reception anywhere I've traveled in the States from my Tracfone. No complaints whatsoever.

I suggested Tracfone several posts ago. I got mine at Staples for $15. Target also sells them, as does Dollar General. You can also buy the minutes at any Walgreen's. The phone is good for as long as you have minutes in the bank, when the minutes expire throw it away.

Take a look at Virgin Mobile Beyond Talk. You buy the phone and the monthly charge is $35.00 plus tax and if you have direct credit card billing it is only $30.00 per month. No contract. You get 300 minutes per month and have almost unlimited Internet, messaging and text. They will throttle things depending on your usage. I have never had a problem with the billing or running over download limits. Also Virgin uses the Sprint network.

Only problem here, i dont want a contract, I have a contract here in England. One is enough
I only want it for text and phoning our sons in U.K. and friends in the villages. So will either get a used one or a throw away one.
I really do thank each and everyone of you for your input, I have learned stuff!!

Default Virgin Mobile phones

We have Virgin Mobile phones. Paid $20 for the phones at Target and for $30 a month, on a month to month basis we get 1500 minutes of talk time and 1500 texts, which is far more than we use. Works great for us. Would never get a contract again, love not having a contract. We use a credit card to pay the monthly charge or you can buy recharge cards most anyplace for the new months charges.
