Default "Dirty Ice"

A large group of Villagers recently had dinner at a new country club restaurant. The place was more than packed but the service was adequate despite having some drinks and food returned. When the bills arrived there was a charge for the "dirty ice" some diners requested with their drinks. To say the least people were surprised and very upset as this charge was not made known to them prior to receiving the bills nor had anyone at the table heard of charging for what would have been thrown out anyway. In the end, someone voided the additional charges. The lesson here is make sure you ask the server if there is a charge for "dirty ice". This is apparently a new tactic for at least one Village restaurant to get more money. This left me with a sleezy impression despite a nice meal and surroundings.

I googled, too. Even put the term in quotation marks. In the last few minutes, I have learned 4 new things:

1. What it means to dirty ice a wedding cake.

2. Lady Gaga sings a song "Dirty Ice Cream."

3. What Lady Gaga means when she sings, "Don't be dirty ice cream, baby."

4. And more than I ever wanted to know about bacteria in restaurant ice
machines.

Dirty ice? I still do not know, but, hey, I can start my day with 4 new things I have learned. And maybe 5, if we find out what dirty ice means here.

-- Oh, and I got to laugh out loud when I added the term bartender to the search and found a site called Chow where bartenders were having a discussion.

"Dirty Ice" is when the bartender makes a martini or a similar drink...makes it in the shaker with ice...the customer wants their drink straight up with no ice but would like the ice that was used to make the drink of the side...that is dirty ice. The flavored ice that was used to make the drink.

Hmmmm. I already said.

Perhaps the charge is due to the extra work of serving and washing an extra glass? How much was the extra charge?

When I order a martini, I usually ask for the dirty ice. I've never been charged for it anywhere in the Villages and that includes most of the country clubs.
I wonder if the OP will come back and say which club. I have a feeling he/she won't.

What does one do with dirty ice? Suck on it after they finish their drink or wait for it to melt?

Sometimes there is a slight overpour when they make a martini. You get that good to the last drop. LOL
Sometimes if I'm drinking slow my martini gets warm. I can put a little of the dirty ice in it that sometimes still has a little flavor from mixing the drink.

Could a designated driver remain the designated driver if he or she was only drinking dirty ice provided by the shaken not stirred drinker? How many glasses of dirty ice would you have to consume before your blood alcohol level is over the legal limit considering the dirty ice drinker is of average height and weight?
