Default Turn Signals & Roundabouts

Rare siting yesterday of a driver using a turn signal while exiting a roundabout. I was pleased and found it very helpful. :)

Many drivers don't even signal anywhere. Having been a part-time driver ed. teacher during summers,I always signal. It is great when people are courteous drivers and signal in traffic circles/roundabouts. Now, if we can only teach them which lane to drive in at the roundabouts......

I believe you meant using a turn signal properly while exiting a roundabout. I saw someone two days ago exit a roundabout while their left turn signal was on.

I want to stress that I agree, proper turn signal usage is always a good thing.

But I like to mention in these discussions that if you obey the two most important rules of roundabout driving (imo)…yield to both lanes before entering, and never drive beside another vehicle in the roundabout…turn signals are little more that a courtesy. A good, desirable courtesy.

When two cars are waiting side by side to enter a roundabout, who enters first to avoid driving beside the other?

Driving beside another vehicle in a roundabout is not a problem if you first yield to traffic in the roundabout and then use the exits that are appropriate for the lane you are in.

I always use RIGHT turn signals to show when and where I am exiting a roundabout. While I understand the instructions for a left turn signals, I actually find these confusing occasionally. I will use the left turn signal when approaching a roundabout so the car behind me knows what I intend to do, however once in the roundabout i only use right signal for exiting.

Regardless of who enters first, or even if both start moving together, it’s easy enough to adjust your speed and position to avoid driving next to each other.

Of course you are entitled to your opinion, but it is one I do not share. Your “if” is huge…one wrong move by a vehicle next to you and boom…a collision.

It didn't take long living here to discover that turn signals should NEVER be taken as gospel. Too many people just don't use them at all, or use them and forget to cancel them.

Very wise advise.

Even the police often do not use turn signals.

In the first time for everything the other day driving south on Buena Vista and someone approaching me heading north. Honked and honked and he ignored me. Idiot could have pulled onto the grass and turned around but hopefully he arrived at his destination safely so he can do something stupid the next day.

I am confused. Can you explain why you would use a left turn signal to enter a roundabout. This would make me think you did not know where you were going.

That one plans to take the third exit.

I also use a left turn signal entering a roundabout when I’m going to make a left turn by going 3/4 of the way around the roundabout. Like villagetinker I turn the signal off when I enter the roundabout then use the right turn signal as I approach my exit.
