I rather see us mining the world's largest supply of natural gas that lies beneath our country. Natural gas burns cleaner and more efficiently than gasoline. Current cars can be converted to run on natural gas and the infrastructure is in place to pipe natural gas into existing service stations. We could even have people that have natural gas in their homes install a pump to fill their own cars and have it on their gas bill.

No, it would totally eliminate fumes but it would reduce them by a significant amount. Creating electricity also creates fumes.

A goal of having 100% electric cars by 2035, or at any time in the future is unreasonable. Hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of people are driving old cars and have no plans to buy a new car. Many of those cannot afford to buy a new car and will never be able to afford a new car. This will hurt the poorest people the most.

And then what happens to all of the gasoline/diesel vehicles that are currently on the road? Can you image the pile of junk created across the country?

Why hasn't anyone that is proposing all electric cars discussed these problems?

Bogie,
I agree that we will require substantial electric power generation using fossil fuels. This is required to supply the flexibility to increase electric power supply to cover situations that wind and solar can not provide. We need to get back to increasing NG production.

NG is the fuel of choice for new electric power generation since the price of fuel (until recently) and cost of the power plant was economic.

I agree that getting to 100% EV's in 2035 or even 50% is not practical.

IMHO, using compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel is not simple to use for the general public. CNG is in use for specific users who have local area to cover and can be refueled at their depot when required. NG companies use CNG for their trucks as do Waste Garbage collectors and taxis in Europe. Use of CNG in Europe saves a lot of tax.

CNG is typically stored at 3,600 psig in special tanks at the local CNG fuel depot and in your special car tank. You would need compressors and not pumps to fill your tank at home with special safety controls equipment. I doubt that the authorities would permit installing this type of equipment in residential neighborhoods.

The power lines in the neighborhoods are all underground. Aren't they? These above ground power lines you speak of are those really big power lines that look like huge people to me.
