Default "Drug House/Chop Shop" Owner

I was thinking/wondering about the owner of the home that got raided recently for drugs.

If he was so ill or not mentally alert enough not to have known about the extra people in the house or the ongoing activities of the illegal sales, etc - just how will he be able to care for himself alone. It is my assumption that the niece was presumably there to care for him.

If he did have any idea whatsoever was was happening, he should have been charged as an accessory for not "dropping the dime" on them.

It would be interesting to know if the niece and her coherts were released on bond and WHO paid the bond AND where they went.

Also would be interesting to know the follow-up on the owner of the house.

This situation is one reason I deplore the rental policy in this community. I especially dislike the policy when someone purchases a home(s) specifically for renting.

This situation received such notoriety that my son-in-law called my wife from his home in New York to see if there was more to the story than he read in the paper

Are we losing the fantasy island glow and becoming a kardashian nightmare?

Yes, agree with you Rubicon! Just a day or so ago, maybe even today, there is a story about a 29 (?) year old woman being caught with heroin on her person, she was renting here. It disgusts me. I said to my other half that people who rent just don't care who they rent to as long as they get their money.

People love bad news. Do you think people watch NASCAR because the cars go fast, hell no they watch for the crashes. Same thing here. We live in an amazing place and some people are waiting for the crash.....I don't think its going to happen.

I feel bad for all the innocent people involved in this situation homeowner and neighbors included. Those who did wrong will be dealt with and I hope they get help if they need it. We live in a community, these things are going to happen and they will be dealt with. I got a similar call from my old home as if it was my fault this happened. People love controversy.

What policy should be put in place about property rentals? I'm not being disrespectful but this is the United States Of America and renting a property is part of our freedom. Could you imagine what would become of our community if rentals were stopped. I believe you would have a whole new can of worms which wouldn't be pretty. I respect the people who invested in our community to rent out their properties, it is not a walk in the park to be a landlord. They deserve to profit.

I agree with you regarding rental homes. However, I didn't get the impression this was a rental situation. The article referred to an owner who had his niece staying with him. The owner was described as ill. I presumed the niece was staying with him to act as a caretaker.

We are now a community of over 120,000 people. I would not call The Villages a Khardashian nightmare by any means.

My post really was about the owner and what will happen to him. If no family will help and he is unable to fend for himself-as he obviously can't, what becomes of him and the property?

The house belongs to the occupant and a co-owner with the same last name as the niece.

Again, I agree with you.

Back to the story....the owner/occupent had medical needs. A relative sent his niece to take care of him but she's the one who had issues with drugs and invited the others in. I would think that the authorities have a good handle on things and the owner/occupent now is in better hands.

So much speculation by folks who have no idea what's going on....me included.

As for rentals...I suspect there's been rentals here since the beginning. Folks just didn't hear about the "darker side" that may or may not have been happening. I somewhat agree with the OP about wishing there was some sort of policy regarding that happening. Not sure how that would be implemented however. I've heard of folks who've made it a business to accrue several properties just for the purpose of renting them.

Some people do not care to own a home but prefer to rent.
I realize that there is a lot of publicity from the online paper about those that are arrested. I would venture to say that like most news they are trying for headlines that attract readers.
Do your research, most of those that are featured in that online paper as arrested are not renters but are living with relatives or parents.
nkirfats: In all due respect I am not talking against renters nor did I address the legality of renting. My concern was not in the short run but in the long run... how will this community develop?

To better understand my point of view is to begin with your point of view. How do you view The Villages? Is it a retirement community for 55+ or is it someone's vacation destination?

The rationale early on for renting was to give people an opportunity to determine if they could adjust to the community............

Well its gone beyond that and if you are looking closely at the menu on this board you will find people who actually want to RENT JUST A ROOM.

there are some who continue to buy units only for rental income and they do not even live here.

clearly they are within their right to rent their homes out. clearly there are a greater percentage of decent people renting.

However, in my view it becomes problematic because homeowners are permitted to transfer their amenity
rights to renters. The Villages could have made it policy that amenity privileges could not be transferred or assigned Recall how the sales people marketed The Villages. its actually cheaper to rent here than to buy here and that dog won't hunt

There are other communities in Florida that stopped permitting renting because it was damaging their community.

Perhaps I am mistaken but you would want to believe that leaders in this community are on the look out to ensure that this community lives up to its reputation and promises to those residents that wanted to call this community home.

and yes I am an advocate for live and let live but i am also concerned as to how this community will develop and what we sow now we reap later.

Again, I agree with you. Unfortunately I think we are getting too big for much to be done about this now, it should have been written into the original By-laws.

Exclamation Suggestions

The Sheriff's Office in Marion County suggested that if you see a home with children's toys spread about, but no kids,
it never appears occupied and a lot of come and go then you may want to let the Sheriff know as it may be a Meth House. I was also supprised to find out that Marion allegedly has the most Meth Houses in Florida and the county is larger than the state of Rhode Island.

Bigger than Rhode Island? There are many rural areas in Marion County. Is not the Ocala National Forest mostly in Marion County?

I disagree about renters. Most low lifes can't pay the rent charged in the Villages. I have many friends, including my sister, who rent here. Wonderful people. We have a couple of houses near us that have the same renters every year. Really nice people.
I think it's just a Florida thing that there are so many renters. Retirees buy, but want to spend summers up north with the family. They rent to offset the cost of maintaining 2 homes.
