Hope others are reading about smart meters and the detrimental affect on people. A lady I work with recently had one installed at her home and started having head aches body ache neck hurting all of which are symptoms of smart meters. I have registered with SECO to never put one at my residence, don't know if that will stop there but if enough people complain maybe they will get the message. Please read up on these meters and determine for yourself your thoughts.

We received an email today concerning these smart meters. Email below.
FYI. The Sumter Electric Cooperative Inc. will be holding a meeting on Tuesday Jan. 22, 2013 at the Savannah Rec. Center. Before the meeting, a vote of all SECO customers will be held. Each household has one vote. The subject of this vote is "Smart Meters". SECO wants to install "Smart Meters" for all their customers homes. This type of meter will monitor your electricity usage so that when and how much electricity you use can be controlled. SECO will also compare your electricity usage to your neighbors electricity usage. The voting will take place at 4:30 - 6:30 pm. The SECO business meeting follows. Dick Bellis is running and he is AGAINST the smart meters. He will vote NOT to bring them to The Villages. There are 9 Board members and a majority vote wins. We need this "no" vote desperately.

They do not sound like a good idea. Electricity costs seem to go up quite a bit when the smart electrical meters are put on houses. Your costs will increase during peak times of usage.
This might be okay if you were not home during the peak usage times - like when we all worked - but now we are at home and would be paying a lot more for our air conditioning in the summer since we do not turn the thermostat down when we stay at home. Go to the meeting and vote NO. |

We have a version of smart meters up north and all they do is allow the meeter to be read from a car passing the house. Our version dose not have the control ability that the newer units have.
One needs to get a true understanding of what you are busing sold. I attended a meeting by SECO on other issues and I asked about smart meters and their transmit power. I was told that your cell phone radiates more power than a smart meter. Also the smart meter is only sampled 6 times an hour. The SECO person did not have all the technical details that I was interested in but that was not the lead topic of his presentation. I would be more interested in the transmit frequency and how readings are passed from house to house across the grid to the base location. This contradicts the statement of 6 samples a minute if the units are passing reading traffic from one house to the other. Interesting topic to say the least. VG |

I got an email about this this morning. I went on the internet and got a lot of pros from the manufacuers and cons from others regarding Health issues,Fires, unkown long term affects etc. There is also the question of job loss, big brother monitoring you more closely and if it's not broken don't fix it. Seems like an awfully large expense by SECO if there isn't a BIG cost saving somewhere down the road. TV alone will have over 50K homes plus all the commercial applications.

I worked for a Utility up North---Smart metering while sold as a cost saving item for customers to monitor their usage in the long run is the lead in for the Utility to introduce "real time pricing" ---You pay more for your usage when the demand on the system is high and less when it is lower.
Ex --At 1pm on a day in the middle of July or August you will pay sometimes 3 to 4 times more for a Kwh --then you would at Midnight -- It can work for certain customers in certain parts of the country ---if you work all day and do everything in your home in the evening --wash,TV, power tools etc. Have your A/C off during the day !!!!!!!!!!!!!! figure out what is best for you !!! ![]() ![]()

Everything I've read is the meter transmit every 10 seconds let alone the increase in cost the micowave that is transmitted is different than a cell phone. Remember also that the co op could turn you off at any time night or day,gee could that hurt someone that needs power for a medical reason. Also this RF has been shown to cause problems with pace makers. Any one here have one. Just don't see any good with these and once they change there is no going back.

We attended the meeting with SECO on Tues. They explained why they would like to put the new Smart Meters on all homes. They also showed us what the new meter looks like. We came home and I checked our meter and also a couple of the neighbors. We have the new meter. SECO is installing them on the newer homes now.

Was a vote held on Tuesday and, if so, what were the results? Just curious as to why a vote was being held if the "smart" meters were already being installed in residences?

There is an article about it in The Orlando Sentinel today about it. The article makes residents of The Villages sound like conspiracy theory nutcases.
It also says that SECO is not going planning to retrofit existing homes with the Smart Meters but only going to put them in new homes.
