Default Bird Feeder (or Something) Outside Window

I have a little nook area right in our Florida room with a tree (magnolia...or something with white blooms) right outside the window. I would love to have something simple to attract some wildlife. I tried a hummingbird feeder once with no luck. (I think my timing and possibly location was bad, but I'm not sure this is a good location for hummingbird feeder anyway.)

Anybody have any suggestions? Even if it's as simple as some sort of bird feeder, although I know squirrels would probably get most of the food...heheh.

Thanks.

Don't know about feeders, but we put out a blue bird house which did attract a few sets of birds but the dang mockingbirds, being territorial but not interested in the nesting house, chased them away. So sad! Will get a water blaster for next spring...not to hurt them, just to chase them away. Good luck!

Why don't you try a finch feeder, filled with Thistle seed. They are small yellow birds and hang upside down to eat. They are beautiful, and entertaining. We had them in our yard for many years and never saw a rat under the feeder. Although, Doves would eat up the spillage on the ground.

If you have problems with large birds trying to eat from the feeder take out the black plastic sticks from the tube and cut about an inch off. The larger birds feet will not be able to stay on the perch.

If you hang the feeder off a tall Sheppard hook, rub the pole down with vase line to keep squirrels away. It's comical to watch them try climbing the slippery pole. Eventually they give up and go away.

If you use a bird food called "hot meats" the rats and squirrels will not eat it...it is coated with cayenne pepper which birds cannot taste but rodents can. It is more expensive than regular bird food but it is out of the seed shell so there is no waste and no mess.

We have 2 "hook poles" with approx. 12" feeder trays on them and attract birds all day long and it's quite a treat to observe them from inside the house. We have a constant stream of doves, blue jays, cardinals, brown striped birds??, and many others. You can buy the pole/feeder tray combo at Lowe's or Home Depot for about $20.
