;D Would you suggest installing a water softener?

Yes. We did and it helped with water hardness and staining in the dish washer.

We had the full house water system installed and are very happy to have done it. We also had a air purification system installed and it really keeps the house less dusty on a regular basis. Some people don't think it is worth it but I now have neighbors who wish they had at least installed the water system.

Just be aware that you should not entertain anyone who just shows up at your door. Solicitation is not authorized by the Villages and you shouldn't automatically trust someone who comes to the door selling what can be a very expensive product.

Check out the yellow pages and talk to neighbors. You will get a lot of good information.

Good Question Steve

Being used to softened water at our northern home, we weren't too happy when we took our first showers in The Villages. We tolerated it for a few visits (we haven't permanently relocated) but I finally gave in when shopping at Walmarts one evening. They had two sizes of softeners and the prices were lower than the home improvement stores. Being a semi professional handieman, I installed it in the garage along the left wall of a patio villa immediately adjacent to the house shutoff. The depth was perfect. The water is great now and we set it for vacation mode when gone. It comes with a bypass valve for washing or watering when softened water is not necessary.
PS: Don't attempt to install this yourself unless you have had experience with CPVC plumbing

Thanks to all for the advice. We currently have one in our northern home (wish the hell it'd sell) but I remember when my parents lived on Lake Manniehaha in Clermont that their water was very soft and used to drive me nuts trying to get soap off my hands. That was back in 1970-1991. Matter of fact I believe they were on a well. Probably city/county water now. Also I will have it installed. No room for error and hate running back to the store to get something I'd forgot or worse yet broke during installation.

I thought water softeners add salt to the system? I know that whenever I stay at the hotels in Walt Disney World, which have water softeners, when I drank water from the tap, my ankles and hands would swell up a LOT. Please advise.

Yes Water softeners use pure salt pellets to rejuvenate the softener material. My wife and I have never noticed a salty taste nor had any swelling problems, which would show up on my wife, shes salt sensitive. Are you sure your feet didn't swell up from walking Disney all day? ;D

Well, yes...that's happened also. But, I know I also had swelling because of the tap water because my hands also swelled. And, since I figured out the problem and switched to bottled water, I've been fine on my WDW trips. I do drink a lot of water. Perhaps the volume of softened water I was drinking compounded the problem. But, for this reason, I'll have to pass on the water softener. (I'm also tired of paying for bottled water and want to stop putting more plastic in landfills,)

Many of TV houses have a water dispenser built in to the fridge and a replaceable filter for this water source. Would this filtered fridge water remove the salt additive from a water softener system?

07 I'm not sure. ??? There's no salt taste at all at our northern residence and yes we have a water/ice dispenser on the frig door and it's filtered. The rest of the house is non-filtered and tap water tastes the same as filtered.

I never got the impression that the water is hard in TV. What are the symptoms?

After seeing this posting, my wife has instructed me to ask more about water softeners (for some reason... apparently she didn't "get it" either!!).

We will be closing on Aug 10, and are trying to get things lined up (or straightened out) - and one of these things now is apparently a water softener, sooo, if there are any recommendations as to brands, installers, etc., I would be very interested in hearing what others have done...

Are you happy with yours, wish you had bought a different brand, used a different installer, etc., I would love to hear from you.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Ken
