Anyone notice the huge flock of white pelicans on the Belmont course lakes the last few days? Very rare site in a residential area. One of North America's largest birds with up to a 9 ft. wingspan and weighing 30 lbs. They feed cooperatively by flapping their wings to force small fish toward shore so the others can eat. Not sure if these lakes hold enough food for them. They differ from the brown pelicans who live here year round and dive for their food.

Not at Belmont today. Guess they're making the rounds of area lakes.

I saw them on the lake at Hacienda. We we got down wind of them there was a very strong smell of dead fish. Pretty cool birds though.

I would imagine since they eat fish and salamanders. BTW they're back to Belmont. Wood storks hang out there too.

Saw them last early evening - a beautiful sight as they were flying in a group of about 20 - 30
