It has been a while since I looked over this list, but I was also told that Styrofoam was NON recyclable and had to go in the trash.

Our recycling people. I was informed of the same thing, when I asked why they didn't take it with the recycling. Not to mention its listed on the "Not Accepted" list on DistrictGov.

Call me skeptical, but I cannot believe that all the stuff they take actually gets recycled into other products. What happens to the stuff that people put into trash cans at shopping centers where there is only one can and no instructions? I think they should collect all the trash together and hire people to separate the stuff that they are actually going to recycle. It would be more efficient and would create jobs.

In regards to Styrofoam, I had purchased several large storage cabinets (kit form), which had LOTS of Styrofoam packing. When I placed this out in the recycling (like I did up North) the recycling guys said this was to go in the trash, and proceeded to empty three large boxes of Styrofoam on the driveway for the trash men. I was lucky, there was no wind, and the trash men were just 2 minutes behind...... All of this was about 3 years ago.

Back in UK we have 4 recycling bins and one trash bin.
Blue is plastic, tins and glass . Red is Paper and cardboard Green is garden waste. Brown is cooked food waste. Black is trash. Styrofoam is trash and not recyclable. They like to take it to the landfill so the wind can blow it all over the county! All stores charge the customer 5 pence ( about4-5cents) per plastic carry out bag. So we take our own bags to go shopping. |

A year ago or so, our town decided they needed to audit people's recycling bins and warn those who were putting non-recyclables in the recycling bins ie: pizza boxes and styrofoam. I decided they make this so difficult, I will just throw everything in the garbage from now on and not worry about it.

The POA had the recycle folks out to speak at a meeting a year or so ago. http://www.poa4us.org/bulletins_file...etin201601.pdf (page 9)
There was a good recounting of what they said in the January '16 newsletter. I was surprised to learn that paper run through a shredder is also not accepted. They use some sort of wind sorter to separate materials, and the shredded paper is too light.

Thanks for that link to the POA bulletin, CFrance. I remember reading it at the time. It gives a clearer explanation than District.gov re items that can be recycled. It explains why paper should not be smaller than an index card, why aluminum cans should not be squashed, and what happens when various materials are dumped on the belt.

Does newspaper have to be separated or does it go in the bag with all other recyclables?
