I think answers that just are kind of not explanatory are not the way to defend carrying a gun.

I have never felt the need of a gun but if people do, fine. I will never understand it personally, but I do believe that you have a legal right to do so.

Many of us believe in second amendment rights but do not see the need at this time and in this place to carry a gun. We have lived all of our lives in exceedingly safe areas, and feel that this is an exceedingly safe area with no need to carry firearms. I have heard all of the canned rhetoric about how "I don't know how unsafe I was" but I did know how safe I was. And this place is still safe. When and if that changes, I will change. But please answer Gerry Ann sincerely.

Gerry Ann, now I know dozens of quite ordinary people who have guns and I am not so shocked as I once was. In fact during the break ins last fall I was very glad to know of their presence close by.

Gracie it's not the carrying of guns that gets me riled up but the high and mighty attitudes of some people spouting off and chastising others for doing something totally legal. There are things I don't approve of people doing but I don't criticize them or preach to them about it.

My guess would be to boost their self confidence or some other shortcomings they may be concerned with. Maybe they'd carry instead of seeing a Doctor to take care of a low-T problem. Who knows what's going on in the minds of others. That's what scares me! I personally don't see the need, nor do I think that because they have the "right" it justifies doing it.

I've had guns since I was 8 years old. My family lived in the country and hunting and the such was part of everyone's life. I used to shoot rats at the landfill on Sunday afternoons. Farmers used to encourage us to help them get rid of woodchucks so that their livestock wouldn't get injured by stepping in the holes in the ground. I still have two 12 gauge pump shotguns in my home in The Villages. I'm not really sure why.

Well if you are confused and "not really sure why?"
Maybe you should turn them in to the sheriff?...

I agree Gracie. That is true. But it only takes one time to be in that kind of danger and you lose your life.

With a lot of what's been happening around here these days, I can't blame anyone for wanting to carry a gun.

Someone said, that this is a retirement community so there is never a need for us to defend ourselves. I believe that quite the opposite is true. Retirement communities are perfect targets for criminals. Most of us are no longer capable of defending ourselves in a physical confrontation.

I believe that we live in one of the safest areas of the country, but that doesn't mean that things don't happen. We have had several people from my neck of the woods arrested in recent months and after seeing there criminal record, I am appalled to know that these people live in my neighborhood. I have actually had contact with some of them and Jenny had an incident with one. They are frightening people.

We may have a very low crime rate, but there is still crime and like I said, it only takes one time.

Nah, they are both rather classic and have considerable value. I might consider selling them to a reputable gun dealer though. I'll have to think about it.

Food for Thought

Guns on Campus’ Laws for Public Colleges and Universities

A Guide for Students and Parents
The overwhelming majority of the 4,400 colleges and universities in the United States prohibit the carrying of firearms on their campuses. These gun-free policies have helped to make our post-secondary education institutions some of the safest places in the country. For example, a 2001 U.S. Department of Education study found that the overall homicide rate at post-secondary education institutions was 0.07 per 100,000 students in 1999.1 By comparison, the criminal homicide rate in the United States as a whole was 5.7 per 100,000 persons overall in 1999, and 14.1 per 100,000 for persons ages 17 to 29. A Department of Justice study found that 93% of violent crimes that victimize college students occur off campus.2

Despite the success of these gun-free policies, an increasingly extreme pro-gun movement in the USA is promoting legislation and litigation to force colleges and universities to allow concealed guns on campus. As a result, schools in Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah and Wisconsin have now been forced in different ways to allow the carrying of firearms on their premises (i.e. campus grounds, classrooms, dormitories, or parking lots). from Colleges and Universities where concealed guns are permitted

The Villages remind me of a campus. My kids have graduated but if they didn't I would want them on a gun free campus. It's safer. Why wouldn't I want the same thing for myself here?

Has it been reported who actually was charged and with what?

Published reports say that the shooter was arrested after law enforcement found him in Lake County. The reports I read did not state what he was charged with or when and where he will report to face those charges.

What possible scenario
could have occurred on 466, this week, that could have made a motorcyclist, any motorcyclist, be justified to fire a gun at a car, any car?

It sounds like a person who has uncontrollable anger issues, no matter what the provocation. I have NEVER felt the urge to shoot at someone, EVER.

I might if someone entered my home and tried to hurt Sweetie or Helene, I would want to tear them apart, but nasty and rude driving has not been a trigger to make me take violent action. We are supposed to act like adults in a motor vehicle..

The scenario I read in the comments section of the article in the ************** dot com was that the motorcycle guy was standing behind the motorist, the motorist was backing up, he backed away, stumbled and fell, the motorist kept coming and he pulled his gun to shoot out the tires because he feared the guy was going to run him over.

Not sure the ladies would agree with your assessment of why they carry?

Because I and many others here don't want what you want.

So the reason the there are less violent crimes on campus is no guns, no other reason, nothing else, really? So the conclusion is lack of guns is the cause of the reduced violent crime, really???

Very interesting article. And I agree with your comment. I am from Wisconsin and agree wholeheartedly with their decision regarding guns.

In Wisconsin as of August 21, 2013, no private or public universities, colleges, or community colleges permit weapons inside of buildings. No private universities permit weapons on campus grounds.

I was going to substitute low-E instead of low-T in this response, but then I thought that just maybe the original may be more correct.

This is General Schwarzkopf you are talking about. Of course he needed guards. I would not compare gun totting villagers to him.
As for the former police, etc living here.....I would guess that very, very few of them carry a weapon because they know it is not needed here.
Unfortunately, the folks that carry seem to have a "need" to tell people that they are. NOBODY needs to know if one is carrying a gun. Only hot shots feel the need to tell others.

That's actually quite funny and may explain a lot. :icon_wink::icon_wink:
