If you ever want to move anything or plant anything go with mulch. The rock is impossible to work with and the weed blocker they put underneath it moves and allows weeds to sprout. At least with mulch you can treat with a pre-emergent weed killer and the soil is continuosly nourished with the decaying mulch. I swear I don't know how this stuff thrives in the sand it is planted in with an occassional dose of fertilizer. Miss my mulch! But if you sure you want rock somehow has a very good deal on TOTV for river rock that they are trying to get rid of. If you decide to go with their offer and need someone to move it I can give you a referral.

We have gone both ways---mulch and rock. If you are a "gardener type" then mulch is better. If not (like me) then rock is your best bet. As mentioned in another post, dirt cheap I've heard has a decent price on rock.

I actually like about 6" of rock in all the beds next to the house. I don't like the bark mulch or the pine mulch right up to the house. But I agree, for your plants' health, mulch is better than rock. We also use rock where the gutters dispense water.

Mulch will be much cheaper initialy, but remember if you want the beds to look clean and kept, you will be replacing or I should say adding to the mulch every 8-9 months...and that is the cost of mulch plus labor. In 2-3 years your rock would be paid for with no additonal work required. Also, Mulch, although it does in the eyes of many look the best, the biggest drawback to using mulch is the threat of termites.
