I was reading a very interesting thread but after only a few posts, the thread was CLOSED. What has happened to freedom of speech? This is not the first time I've seen threads closed. I'm dismayed.

If it was the thread about the picture on Sunday's paper closed after 9 posts, it was quickly deteriorating into the political sphere. However, I think the mod should have posted that he was moving the thread to the political section rather than just closing it. It is also possible that the OP didn't like the direction it was headed in and closed it.

I would have preferred that it would have been moved. Unfortunately a post of mine (and a few others) were removed before the thread was closed.

I re-created much of what I had said and made it a post in political forums, where it was allowed to remain.

The problem with the political forums is that it is the one area where people are allowed to be abusive, post outright lies and insult other posters with no fear of having their posts removed, or being punished for outright nastiness and using terms that might get them a punch in the nose if they said such things in person.

For this reason, many people refuse to participate in the political forums.

Sad to say............

"Freedom of Speech" ??? Really???

Our Founding Fathers were not concerned about what you may or may not say on ToTV.

Freedom of speech does not include the right:

To incite actions that would harm others (e.g., “[S]hout[ing] ‘fire’ in a crowded theater.”).
Schenck v. United States, 249 U.S. 47 (1919).

To make or distribute obscene materials.
Roth v. United States, 354 U.S. 476 (1957).

To burn draft cards as an anti-war protest.
United States v. O’Brien, 391 U.S. 367 (1968).

To permit students to print articles in a school newspaper over the objections of the school administration.
Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier, 484 U.S. 260 (1988).

Of students to make an obscene speech at a school-sponsored event.
Bethel School District #43 v. Fraser, 478 U.S. 675 (1986).

Of students to advocate illegal drug use at a school-sponsored event.
Morse v. Frederick, __ U.S. __ (2007).

No mention of ToTV yet.

ToTV staff have the freedom to delete posts, close threads and remove members at will.

The Freedom of Speech clause of the Constitution protects citizens from prosecution by the government for what they say, not from censorship by a privately owned entity.

From the site guidelines everyone agreed to as a condition of participating on TOYV:

Although the Constitution of the US guarantees that Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, Talk of the Villages is not Congress. Freedom of speech rights do not extend to this privately owned website. The Rules and Guidelines of this website governs the behaviors and activities of the members. If you choose not to follow the guidelines agreed to during registration, the result is a disabling of your account.
