They definitely should have listed it in the Rec News. I can understand being a little upset about that...I would feel the same way if I showed up for a scheduled event and something else was going on. But aside from that, I agree with Uptown Girl. Swimming lessons are no different than any other organized events that are held in the sports pools. It doesn’t matter how many people show up, the pool is reserved for that event during that time.

Ahhhh...this would explain why Colony Pool is so crowded! It wasn't fun last week to try to get combo-time in with folks over-lapping the lanes and swimmers in the walking lanes as well.

I have a question. Is the Lifelong Learning College for Villages' residents only, or can "outsiders" take their classes too?

Mudder 03-26-2012 07:00 PM

I happened to go to Seabreeze pool about the same time today, maybe a little earlier. I wanted to show some visitors where I sometimes swim my laps. I saw the sign too but just went right out on the deck. There were about 6 people swimming laps. I didn't see the instructor anywhere. It would have upset me greatly if I came to swim laps and couldn't because the instructor was using one lane. I'm happy that they offer swim lessons, but seriously don't think they need to shut the whole pool down. I've been there when scuba lessons were going on and we lap swimmers were using some of the lanes. When a group rents the pool for a party I think it has to be on a Sunday afternoon. If they shut down the pool every Mon. and Weds., especially without warning, that's just not right. They know how many people signed up for lessons and then can determine how much room is needed. Now that I think of it in the past i have been there with lessons going on and we were still able to lap swim.
Please report what you find out from rec. dept. I'm with you, it irks me.

I was one of the people who signed up through the Lifelong Learning College to take the beginner swimming lessons from 2 to 3 on Mondays and Wednesdays. I have to tell you that the majority of the people who came wanting to swim laps were unbelievably rude!!!! It is true the classes were not listed in the activities paper but was not the fault of the teacher. The rec centers are the ones who put the activities in the paper and they definitely screwed up. They did post signs on the front doors with very, very bright yellow paper but some people still came in and gave the teacher a hard time. Granted today which was the last day of class there were only four of us but the class did start with 12 people each of us being taught in individual lanes. Several people were so deathly afraid of the of putting their face in the water they just never came back.

What I don't understand is why are people complaining about the Lifelong Learning College renting the pool. We all paid a pretty penny to take these lessons and were more than willing to because of the reputation of the swimming instructor. Back in the fall I paid to take line dancing classes through the College and I didn't hear anyone complaining about the room in the rec center being rented out for those classes.

Truthfully with all the pools in the Villages I am appalled at all the nasty, rude and inconsiderate people who came into our class and wanted to argue it out with our instructor. For goodness sakes...... it was only 6 classes!!!!

I have only been in the Villages for a little less than a year and am shocked at the behavior of the people we encountered during this class. All I can say is with as may pools that there are in the Villages if I ever complain about not being able to go to one of them because classes are being held then please.... just shoot me!!!!!!!

I am so sorry to hear about the rudeness. To me there is NO excuse for that. Gentlemen and gentlewomen do not act like trash when they are faced with a disappointment or altered plans. I cannot get over it. I believe that some people are taught to talk back and argue down others and some people...like where I am from are taught to hold their tongue and make their complaint to someone who can change things.

Don't give up on all of us, please. I hope someone will shoot me, if I act like that over something that is not life threatening...and only inconveniencing.

I am the one who thought having two in a class was awful, but now I see that in the beginning there were 12 and each was using a lane.

We learn so much on this forum if we listen to others and knowledge has altered my view manys the time.

Uptown Girl 03-26-2012 07:54 PM

Thanks, Gracie.

seashorecaroline 03-26-2012 07:55 PM

Thanks Gracie!!! If only the people who are the complainers would take the time to find out the full details before they fly off the handle. And just to let you know..... I don't own a gun. :)

Just to be clear....I am the original poster, but I wasn't rude to anyone. In fact I didn't speak to anyone in the pool. I spoke to the guy in the rec center, and I certainly wasn't rude to him either. From the replies it seems that some people think it's ok and some don't. But I must add that I am becoming a little worried about the lack of civility in some of the replies to not only my post, but to many others as well. But that is probably the subject of another thread.

VillagerNut 03-26-2012 08:21 PM

I know of a lady that comes to the Parrothead get togethers that is not a Villager. How does that happen?

I can tell you are a nice person. I feel bad for everyone who just wants to exercise and there isn't room. And I know how annoyed I would be changing into swimwear and driving over to find I couldn't swim.

If you check the catalog you will see that most classes are open to the general public.

ilovetv 03-26-2012 10:25 PM

If I were teaching a swim class that had dwindled to the point of using only 2 lanes while 8 or 10 lanes sit unused, I would let the people who showed up use those open lanes. They'd be disturbing nobody.

It is very crowded when trying to get lap pool time, especially at Seabreeze, from 3-6 p.m.
