We have a 33 yo son confined to a wheelchair. Currently he just sits all day with no friends to talk to and no one around except us. I'm sure he is tired of us. Yes, we do have things here in Atlanta, but it is 1 day monthly. We want to be able to take him in our golf cart everywhere, instead of loading up the h/c van, then try and find a large enough area to lower a ramp. A golf cart community is ideal.

We have sold our home and plan on buying somewhere in TV before the end of 24. I realize TV has the STAR program, but I'm wanting to reach more deeply. Looking at weekly gatherings, adult sitters for night outs, creating a group home, et cetera. Currently FL has 27k+ awaiting beds and it is not FIFO to a bed, so we are interested in having something daily or 2-3x weekly so they can enjoy life. If you are in a similar predicament or know of someone, please let me know.

Is he only physically disabled, or mentally disabled as well? Is he able to communicate? There are a few respite care clubs, where you can drop off your son for a couple of hours and he's given a group, with volunteers to keep him entertained, provide a snack, offer movement (seated exercise) opportunities, etc. I think they're all for dementia/alzheimers but there might be others that accept "well-brained/body-disabled" folks.

Also make sure your home is fully wheelchair accessible. Some homes are built with rooms that are difficult to turn into or out of in a wheelchair.

Also consider that golf carts don't have the types of seatbelts that would secure your son; if he isn't able to hold himself upright and reach for the side-handle of the cart, it might not be a good option. There are enclosed golf carts like Atomic, which you can even get with air conditioning. But they're expensive, and you wouldn't be able to fit a regular fold-up wheelchair in it. It'd fit a transport chair in the back but then you'd be limited to your son and whoever is driving, no one else would fit with the transport chair taking up most of the back seat.

As for the golf cart,you may want to consider a 4 passenger version, and a light weight wheel chair.
There are over 3000 clubs, so there should several that could interest your son.
Without getting to personal you may some more suggestions if you can provide the type of handicap.

I also did see one guy at Walmart who had a tricked-out golf cart - it was pretty amazing. He had no use of his legs, but he had use of his arms. The cart had a pullout ramp, he wheeled up onto it and positioned his wheelchair where the driver's seat would normally be. All controls of the golf cart were handled with his hands, brake, acceleration, horn, emergency brake. Very very cool. So something like that -could- be custom-made for you and your son, but again - that'd be pretty expensive.
