I used to sell items on Facebook. I saw a Facebook book from TOTV stating it was safer and more reliable to sell on their site as they somehow only allow people from The Villages. Not true. The first item I posted and the first person to supposedly want to buy what I was selling, turned out to be a scam. Luckily, I googled what they were doing (sending me a check for a lot more than I asked for the furniture and sent me a check and asked if I could pay the movers that were going to pickup the furniture). Talked with my bank and they reviewed the check. It was a scam.

I'm curious. How does TOTV need to do better? As I understand it, you don't need to live in The Villages to be a member of the TOTV website. Are you suggesting that the TOTV website should verify that people actually live in The Villages before allowing them be members or to respond to classified ads?

I suggest that you state in your ad (caps) 'Cash only, no checks' any bills over $20 will be checked at the local bank. This should be sufficient to stop (or limit0 the scammers. If you are selling expensive items you might also reference using a public place like the local police station or bank to complete the transaction.

Your first post, welcome. Please report that person using the Contact Us found on the bottom of this site. The only way the scammer got your contact info was by having an account on TOTV. They do respond so you cannot say do better if you never contacted them in the first place. Here is the info from their website rules page:
Talk of the Villages website is created to be an online community for The Villages Florida residents and those seeking information on The Villages Florida community and lifestyle. You place any ad on any public website, you need to take responsibility on how you post the ad. As stated by other posters….Cash Only, large bills verified at bank prior to transaction.
If you post those details, you will rarely get a scam. Also, your neighborhood will usually have their own Facebook page, requiring ownership within that neighborhood to sign up. Out of five neighborhoods, I have never had an issue selling within a neighborhood website then again it’s cash only. Take the responsibility that you could’ve done better. Even a resident within TV may not be up to the standards that you accept. I am surprised that you had to look up the scam. It’s very common. Their websites that will tell you what to look for on scams. The police departments have things on their website of what to observe You also need to contact talk of the villages on the posters identification. So admin can take correct steps. |

I'm sorry to hear you encountered this!
The classifieds system is intended for Villagers only. We try our best on the site to prevent scammers from creating accounts through our moderation system in place for all new users. Newly registered users may be flagged for IP addresses, among other indicators to help prevent any scammers from getting on the site. However, it is impossible to prevent scammers from getting in at times. Due to this, we have tried our best to publish posts as well as send news blasts with information concerning red flags to watch out for with scammers. The big two we always caution of are potential buyers suggesting sending cashier's checks or using gift cards as a form of payment. I noticed another user mentioning to reach out via the contact us page, which I urge all users to do if they encounter this sort of activity. Just remember, if you have been targeted, that scammer is probably trying it with others, so the sooner we can figure out their username/email, the sooner we can ban them as well as their IP address. You can also always send me a DM on here as well. All that being said, I will work on creating a new informational post about red flags as well as discuss with my team about any additional steps we can take to prevent scammers. |
