Dear OP that exact scenario is what caused me to buy an entire new unit. I upgraded to the best and am not sorry. The unit is quieter, more cost efficient and can be remotely controlled. Still better the copper tubing original buried beneath the outside unit rerouted so that if a problem does occur the fix is easy

Ours just stopped cooling I would also like to know who you used? At the moment we have Mike with Chuck Farrell coming out in an hour or so.

I hope they gave you a real good reason as to why it needs to be replaced. If they told you its rusty or dirty or some other such reason, thats not good enough. Almost any A coil will show some rust after one year and will not look clean. Some of these contractors will do anything to sell you something. I agree with the others- have Chuck Farrell look at it.

What prompted the service call?
What was the reason given for recommending a new A coil?
It is quite a simple device with no moving parts.
The life expectancy of a quality unit is usually 10+ years. With a very high percentage lasting well into the teens.
I do think the trades and vendors in TV take advantage of the naive and gullible and too polite to challenge residents.

Presumably it has a leak? If you are being told it has a leak, they should be able to show you where it is with an "electronic wand" that senses refrigerant. Assuming it is a leak, 7-years is a bit early for a leak but not unheard of. Make sure they show you where the leak is before making any decisions.

I had an A coil replaced in my home in North Florida. The A coil costs about $200-$300. Labor should be about 3 hours @ about $75 per hour. $1200 sounds way too high.
