the craziest thing happened to me last friday. i was mowing my lawn, backyard, and looked down into one of the shrub beds. to my surprise there was a dead fish in the mulch. most of its head had been eaten off, but even so the remains were about 12 inches long. it looked like one of the big fish that usually swim in lake sumter. it was quite fresh (not smelly yet); my deduction was that some sort of bird predator dropped it while taking its dinner home to the family. just really weird! and no, i did not filet it and put it on the barbecue.

Eagles and Osprey (fish hawk) are in this area. There is an Eagle refuge on TV property. As you say, one of them probably dropped it, and as the old saying goes, "A fish rots from the head."

Jeff, was walking my dog a couple of months ago and saw a newspaper and about an 18 " fish in some ones driveway. At first all I could think about was the Godfather movie with the horse head. After thinking it through, I realized there was a pond across the street and a fish had probably dropped it. Talking to the owners, that is what they thought too!

A week or so ago, I came home after a social event and found a catfish in my driveway! I also figured that an osprey or an eagle had somehow lost its grip on its catch and had dropped it. I didn't look at it closely enough to see if I could identify claw marks - it was pretty banged up from hitting the driveway!
I left it there overnight, kind of hoping that some other predator would come and carry it away or eat it! But, it was still there in the morning, so I scooped it up and put it in my trash. I've seen plenty of nature shows where a caught fish is dropped because another predator bird tries to take it away, but never in all my years did I ever expect to find a fish in my driveway! When playing at Riley Grove 5 years ago was on the fairway opposite Lake Sumter Landing when a very large fish dropped in front of me. Looked up and hovering over me was a large white bird....Ooops
