Default Smoke

Get used to it. With the dry weather and lack of rain, fires burning as far away as the GA/FL border will create smoke that travels this far south. Then there are the occasional forest fires in Ocala Natl Forest and some controlled burning there and around TV and with the right wind conditions we will get it. Sometimes it lasts for hours, some times days and in the not to distant past, for weeks.

So while there is a County ban in effect on open burning, when that gets lifted we will occasionally get smoke from someone near TV who is burning brush or trash.

Good thing our homes are air conditioned and we have pretty effective window seals to prevent it from getting inside, it has been and will continue to be annoying for some and dangerous, to those who have breathing problems.

So get used to it, and try to stay indoors, because it is part of life in Central FL.

I had a couple racks of ribs on the smoker for 7 hours yesterday. Did it smell like hickory?

There has and will continue to be a smoke problem in all of Florida because the yocums here think it's OK to burn whatever they want to get rid of. In the northeast, open burning was forbidden 30 years ago - for obvious reasons. But the idea that open burning pollutes the air, damages peoples lungs and impacts the quality of life has not registered in Florida and other Southern states. Attempts to get state legislators involved in halting these medeival practices fails because "agricultural interests will be affected" and the legislators seem powerless to fight the developers and agri-business interests. More of us transplants have to get involved with environmental groups here in Florida to pressure the Legislature to stop open burning.

I am sure some of you will remember the terrible time we had with smoke in 1998. It was in the monthe of June and you could not even go out of your house for almost a full week. There were terrible Fires and it went all the way up to North Florida and the loss of forests were devistating. It is not always caused by people burning trash. You have to remember you are in a location in Florida that is very beautifull but also known as the Lightning Capitol of the World. As I am sure you have experienced the lightning storms are prety bad and they also contribute to fires starting and as you know these strikes are considered an Act Of God. I do agree there should be a ban on people burning trash but like I explained above there are other natural factors that have to be taken into consideration. Sometimes we have to take the good with the bad because after the Major Lightning season ends there is no more beautifull place to live It sure beats Ploughing Driveways and Driving in Ice and Snow.I realixe the smoke is not good for the envoirnment but it is just a fact of life in the south.
