What do you do to ensure the safety of your house up north while you are enjoying the winter in TV? Any input would be appreciated.

We sold our home and built a beautiful inlaw onto our daughter and her family's home in MA. In this way, the inlaw is safe and sound and this move forced us to downsize and get rid of the excess "stuff." It's working out very well and a tremendous savings since we no longer pay utilities or real estate taxes or upkeep. Family feels that us adding the inlaw has increased the value of their home so that they wouldn't hear of us paying utilities, etc.

We stay in the inlaw summers and TV winters. Best of both worlds.

Wish we could do that. All our kids moved to FL so we bought a home in the village of Mallory this year. Now the problem of what to do with our condo in MA during the winter. Waiting until the ecomony is better to sell.

Gee, barb, that sounds like a perfect solution. Unfortunately, that won't work for us. I was wondering if people winterize their houses up north or do they have someone check on the house weekly like they do here in TV? Because we probably would not be coming down until after the holidays, is it possible to winterize your house in winter????

This is one of Mr. Boomer's arguments for getting the generator of his dreams. Of course, the generator of Mr. Boomer's dreams could probably power Disney World. (The generator is our next project. Talks are now in the mediation process.)

We live lakeside here in Maine and are surrounded with neighbors who winter in Florida. In October the plumbers start showing up to drain the water systems and put environmentally safe anti-freeze in the toilets. The doors are then locked until Spring when the water gets turned back on. This way you do not have to heat the house. If you do not drain the systems and the power goes out you risk a freeze up in the house not to mention the cost of heating a house that is empty.
