I live in a courtyard Villa.....there are concrete walls between my home and a back yard property. There is a medium size maple tree on there side of the wall. I can't understand why anyone would plant a maple tree. I'm from New England and am VERY farmillar with maple trees. When that tree gets more mature, the branches will hang well over the wall. The root work will be on the surface and will eventually do some structural damage to the wall. On top of all that, there will be the pile of leaves that both of us will need to rake. Been there, done that! Sure don't want to be raking every fall. I'm not sure the present home owner planted it, but I sure wish they would consider removing it before it gets too much bigger. Just don't know how to broch the subject since I'm new to the area. Any suggestions!

Just curious....Did you know the tree was there before you purchased your home?

Ask them if they would consider removing or relocating the maple tree. You could even offer to pay half the cost. You sound like a sincere and reasonable person.

Who plants the trees?
We can't even figure out who chops them down.

Thanks for comments etc....I did buy sight unseen, but the tree would not have been a deal breaker. My curiosity was why anyone would plant a Maple tree in a courtyard Villa. God knows how big they get and the damage to walls and foundations those surface roots can do. I guess the best suggestion is to talk to the home owner. Perhaps they are unaware of the structural damage it will cause. Worse case scenario will be I'll have to cut the branches once they extend over the wall...at least eliminate that much raking. As far as our shared wall....only time will tell how that turns out. Still I wonder why that tree was planted. Notice none of the villages have tree lined streets with Maples. Lovely for New England, but not Florida. Just boggles my mind...at least what's left of it.

Are you sure that you are allowed to cut off the branches that come over into your yard over the wall? If that was the case I've got a couple of tree branches that I'd like to cut, but I'm assuming that if the tree doesn't belong to me, I'm stuck cleaning up the mess from someone else's tree in my yard.
