Default Curious: Why do we have gates?

Perhaps the answer should be obvious to me but it isn't. We all roll down our windows to flash our gate passes, raising the gate a thousand times a day. However, if you have no gate pass, anyone can just push the button and come right on in. Is the purpose to promote the illusion of security, or does it in fact provide security by appearing to be secure? Just curious...

Have to have the gates... One huge reason (IMO). the gates cause all cars and trucks to STOP... which allow all golf carts to cross safely. Can you imagine the accidents with trucks flying through at the same time the golf cart crossing has an obstructed view... absolutely have to have the gates.

And the gates definitely give the illusion of security. A lot of visitors to TV don't realize that the roads are public property, and that you can gain entry by pushing a button.

The gates do provide some security since each vehicle, coming and going, is videotaped. If something does happen within our community and we know a vehicle discription, using the tapes can be very helpful.

Are you sure that every gate is videotaped?

Sometimes it's faster to use visitors gate and get waved through.

One of my club's had the director of Community Watch as a speaker. He said all gates use videotape. One of the ways videotaping has been used is to identify vehicles that crash through gate arms. The reason for gates is traffic control and to make it easier for drivers to transition to a lower speed limit since neighborhoods have a lower limit than the main roads.

The gates definately make it a little safer for golfcarts to cross through but golfcarters still have to be cautious in that area.

There were numerous instances that I observed where a lead car used their card to raise the gate followed by an idiot right on their rear bumper rushing thru before the gate had a chance to close. Then the second car will complain if the gate hit their car. My understanding is that the gates are videotaped to take care of any disputes of damage done to cars if the gates hit them.

Default And did you know...

The gates are also monitored by Community Watch personel from a central location. When you push the buttom for entry at any location, the camera can be switched to that specific location to see who is entering. I was surprised to see all the monitoring screens and what really goes on behind the scene. And yes, our roads are public which mean anyone can have access.
