Interesting....here in Silver lake, we have had a lot of vandalism going on and although I know, in my case, it was my neighbor, there still is quite a bit of damage to houses and even a few carts being stolen.

ATM's should be used at the banks only where the camera's are. I would never use one that was tucked away in a corner like the ones at Sanibel.

Thanks for posting this info. I hope they catch the ATM bandits and all the criminals that are roaming our streets. There should be an extra penalty for preying on the elderly!!!

There is. Check the FL Statutes. Crimes Against the Elderly Often Bring on Harsher Sentences | Criminal Defense Attorneys

Here's a bit of an update related to the original post. Came via e-mail to me from the VCDD e-notification system:

"Dear Subscriber,

The Villages enjoys the reputation of being a very safe community to live in. On occasions, however, people find themselves in awkward positions and call Community Watch to report the incident and to ask how they may have avoided or handled the situation differently, if it occurs again.

A Village resident recently called Community Watch to advise of a vehicle that had pulled up behind their vehicle at a postal station believing it was blocking their ability to back out of the parking spot.

Community Watch followed up with the resident to investigate the incident in detail and communicated with law enforcement.

Please remember it is always best to immediately report any incident to the 911 center if you find it disturbing or if you feel threatened in any way.

In addition, there have been rumors of attempted ATM thefts or robberies and after checking with all law enforcement agencies providing service within The Villages area, we have been advised there has been no report of any activities of this nature.

It is always a smart thing to be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. However, we do not know if there was any criminal intent on the part of the Toyota occupants. They could have been Villagers just a tad confused about parking; the time of "a few minutes" could really be just a few seconds; and the entire thing could be just a mistake. It is not a first hand experience - just like so many other things that have been posted and then found not to have happened as stated.

Not to be a nay-sayer but as in the children's game of "Telephone", the final outcome is seldom like the input when there are different people than the original involved in the story telling.

This has been posted on the bulletin board at Mail Stations, so The Villages is taking it seriously.

I received a couple of these emails also. In my case, whether its true or not, it made me realize that when I check my mailbox, sometimes very late at night, I should be more careful of my surroundings. This is a good lessons learned and I will take heed.
