Somewhere I remember reading about removing the lanai screen door to help prevent screening from being blown out during a strong wind event. Is this something anyone else has heard about? Going to see if I can find anything online about this.

We lived in Palm Harbor, FL from 1996 through 2005 and never took off the lanai's screen door. Threw all furniture in the pool and secured anything loose. I would think removing the screen door would actually push more wind into the birdcage???

Palm Harbor seemed to be the target off all the 2004 hurricanes at one time or another. One reason we moved from the Tampa Bay area n 2005 to the Villages was to get out of the target area of storms coming up the west coast of FL.

I continue to learn from this forum. You threw all of the lanai furniture into the pool? Why did you do that instead of bringing them inside?

I've been searching for this info Tal, but still can't seem to find it anywhere. I know I read it somewhere and will see if I can find it....though the chances are slim and next to none ....

Have friends who live in Palm Harbor, they've been there for years and seem to be resigned to being in the middle of the bullseye. Had enough hurricanes growing up.....and then traded for earthquakes. Guess you can't win, if it's not one natural disaster, it's another....

Gracie I guess it depends on how much stuff you have to bring inside and how easy it is to move it all. Throw all the patio chairs in the pool..that what they do at alot of ocean front resorts.....they will not get blown around there and you can bring the flat tables inside or other wind prone objects. This the pool is a convient place to put your chairs if a neighbor or someone is watching your place. Afterwards you can go for a swim and retrieve it al and just wash it down.

Info on preparing your home pool for hurricanes...though around here, your main concern could be too much water from rain. Current thoughts are to never put metal or glass furniture in the pool....metal can scratch the finish, rust and thus stain, and glass, well, if it somehow gets broken, you may not be able to see or find all the pieces and risk injury.
Personally, I'd just lower the pieces in carefully since I wouldn't have enough room in the house what with all the plants I'd have indoors...

no, I don't think this is necessary. Is the whole lanai screened in? If it is, you gotta figure lots of air circulation.

I did find a recommendation about removing some of the screening, but that's not what I remember reading. One thing that may have some influence on how well screening stands up to wind is the tightness of the weave....more strands per square inch, the less easily wind can blow through the screen. I'm continuing to look.

We did not want to stain the carpet of floor with rust runoff from the lanai chairs. These were quite light and you could just drop them into the pool.

Any glass of course we had to secure somehow in the lanai; like the picnic table which had a glass top.

This seems to have good tips.

When we lived in Naples we learned to cut a slice in some screens. A lot less expensive to replace screens than a bird cage - and we saw hundreds of collapsed bird cages after hurricanes.
