Default Lanai insurance question.

The house we purchased already has a lanai under frame, not under a birdcage. We want to extend the lanai out about 10' and wide about 20' under a new birdcage structure that will attach to the home. My question is will this require a rider to our home insurance or will it be just considered part of the home?

Best to ask your agent.

It will be covered as part of the house (no rider required), but you should notify the insurance agent because it may affect your coverage amount and/or premium.

I agree with notifying your insurance company about the addition, in our case hurricane IAN tore out 6 sections of the roof screening, and the rest was damaged to the point that the entire roof (33 panels) needed to be replaced. Imagine turning in a claim for a structure they have no idea exists?

Consult with your agent since you will need to increase your policy limit. Was in the biz and except for some rare situations/different insurance policies this should be covered as long as it is permanently attached. Even if it is free standing structure, most, if not all, homeowners policies would cover this under a separate limit for other structures on the property such as a free standing garage.
